No movement flange relative to flange on downpipe.

Heat shields will shift somewhat, they are welded on.

Beneath the shields, should you remove them, are asbestos mats.

Hi Jason,
The surging was only occuring when moderately accelerating (i.e., accelerator positioned just before engaging the WOT - at WOT there was no surging) and it was only noticeable in 1st or 2nd gear (automatic trans). The surging was very light and barely noticeable. At light acceleration, there was no noticeable surging.

The other symptom was a rough idle on a cold start right after the computer goes into closed loop O2 feedback (about 10 seconds after start up depending on outside temperature). Car idles around 1000 rpm immediately after startup and is smooth but after O2 feedback starts, the idle drops to about 700 (within spec) and idles rough until it gets close to normal operating temperature.

Both of these problems went away when I disconnected the O2 sensor lead from the harness lead that was coming from the computer. With the O2 sensor disconnected, the car is running rich, of course so I need to check the condition of the spark plugs too. I still plan on resolving this but other "projects" got in the way and the temporary fix seemed to work for now.

Is your shark surging or having similar symptoms??

Yea Dwayne just like you I'm having a light barely noticeable surging. Still working on it. I think I found a fuel injector plug backed off and a wire loose on one of the temp sensors maybe the temp2 sensor. Seems to be much better but still working the issue.

Jason,
Just wanted to get back to you on the O2 sensor again. I connected it up today and, as expected, the car performed as before. I also checked the spark plugs. After 15K miles running rich (i.e., with the O2 sensor disconnected), the plugs looked great! I'll probably go back to "disconnected mode" until I have the time to do more troubleshooting. Everything's fine with the O2 sensor disconnected so it's not a priority now to track it down. If you find anything, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Good luck.

Thanks Dwayne I'll try the same thing tomorrow and see what happens. Sean told me something else to check and I forgot what it was. Been out fighting the outer door seals and I've lost my mind
