Talking Definately Maybe?

This is my first message on the rennlist, what an amazing site!

I plan to change my car in about two months time and am considering a 928. I have a budget of around £10K and would hope to get a decent 10/11 year old 928 for this sort of money.
I have be investigating as much as I can about 928's, and have had some good feedback from the 928Gb site, although some of the feedback does worry me, (breakdowns etc)
I wonder if I could run one doing 12,000 miles per year all year, all weathers.

I currently run a BMW535i sport which although it has done 160k is still fast, loaded, immaculate, and very very reliable. I am used to 20MPG, and a maintainance budget of around £1500 + tyres per annum to keep my BMW in top condition.
I drive fast but safe, I never thrash my car.

Would this budget be enough to run a 928. I would be keeping the car for at least 3 years.

I am very passionate about my car, and driving. I love it! What is like to own a 928. Never a day goes by when I don't want to drive my car, I still want to feel this when I change cars.

Thanks

Lou

I would think that your maintenance budget should be ok. Naturally it depends on the condition of the car in the first place and the maintenance costs can vary wildly if you have a high price item (transmission) go out. From what I've read (I've only had my '82 for 9 months), it sounds very reasonable to me. I don't think anyone can give you a definite answer but I think you're budget ought to be fine.

My 1978 5 speed has averaged about 1000 dollars per year for the last ten years. I too am a fanatic about all the little widgets working. I do all my own work and sometimes the time and cost get me down. Then after a road test "all is good with the world" again. Don't think I will ever sell it.

Thumbs up

I drove both BMW (2000 328i and 2001 325i) and 928 simultaneously. No question about it the 928 ruled! I will be getting into another 928GTS as soon as possible..."Trading UP" from my 993.

There really is no substitute.

Howdy Louisa,

Greetings from Texas ! The 928, even the 4.5L older models won't be a dissappointment.
I know there are a lot of 'small' European cars that seem to be wound really tight and of course someone is always going to spring a 'sleeper' on you - a, particularly, EVIL VW Golf GT near Groetzigen,Stuttgardt, FRG comes to mind -. And if you get a Euro 928, (obviously)even the earlier models should have all the low end/midrange V8 grunt a normal enthusiast should want. Though where in the world you would be able to use the top end is beyond me. I sincerely believe you will be enchanted with the handling of the 928 series. If you do get one, get familiar with those old Farm/Castle/Hedgerow roads (paths) around Hereford. I had the dubious pleasure of working with the Queens Own, 22 SAS, outside of Hereford and would love to zip around the area in a capeable automobile. Plenty of quaint Pubs in the area, too! As to maintenance costs: use the Archives on this and other sites, whatever minor/major work you as the owner can accomplish, SIGNIFICANTLY, reduces both the cost of ownership and the, unbeknownst to you, thrashing the mechanic's -test drive time !!!- will deliver. For parts, compare internet prices -delivered to your doorstep-to what your mechanic says he can get them for. If the cost favor you and the internet parts supplier go that way keeping in mind the Shop figures on getting a shilling or so mark-up profit off the parts they provide -Don't step on to many toes! And ALWAYS try to get a solid cost estimation form the shop prior to ths start of Shop work. ENJOY!!!
And, finally, though I have a preference for the S thru 1986 1/2 models all 928's have a distinctive, classy look about them. All are unique. Kind of like seeing an old Jensen Interceptor - rare but, timeless.... Yeah,
most Chevy Corvettes will, probably, trounce me. But, they are, virtually, commonplace.
Bye' for now,

Louisa,

You can't be too well informed when you are considering buying a 928. They are reliable and not expensive to maintain if they have been maintained properly; unfortunately, many have not been. An average of 1500 pounds a year sounds like a reasonable budget provided that the car you buy has been well maintained.

I recommend that you seek out other 928 owners in the UK who can recommend a good 928 mechanic near to you. Porsche mechanics - even dealers - are not necessarily knowledgeable about 928s and many could not care less about it. "Near" is relative; a good 928 mechanic is worth travelling for. I travel across Sydney for mine.

Don't buy a 928 without getting your chosen mechanic to perform a pre-purchase inspection. If the vendor objects to this, walk away. Expect such an inspection to take two hours or more. This may not sound cheap, but you could spend many times more than this if you buy a car with a problem. You should negotiate on the purchase price based on the cost of any necessary repairs your mechanic highlights.

I have owned my 1980 928 (4.5 litre) for over eight years, and I love driving it every day. You will really appreciate the 928 at high speed; even today, few cars give you the same confidence at speed which the 928 does.

It's good to see a lady passionate about her car!
