Default stalling

My 83 928 has recently developed a stalling problem. While driving, the car suddenly shuts off,as if the key were turned,no sputtering. It turns over strongly, but shows no inkling of starting.Repeated attempts to start are futile. After waiting a few minutes, the car starts as if nothing had occured, and runs normally. This has occured twice in the past week.Prior to this problem,I had a problem with low power as the car warmed up.I would have to feather the gas and wait for the power to come on,at which time the car would run fine. This problem seems to have been replaced by this much more troubling one.The car sees very limited use,and sits for weeks at a time. There hasn't been any work performed recently that could have disturbed anything under the hood. The car runs perfectly otherwise.I did have a problem with battery draining last year, but that problem seems to have cured itself.Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

add a can of techron to the gas, when was the last fuel filter? Do you have the famous green wire that goes to the distributor? IF so its a good time to replace it if it looks original.
Have you done any elex cleaning?
IE clean the hot post connections, both under the 11mm bolt and disconnect the 14 pin connector clean these with the pink eraser, also look at the elex ignition box located under the hot post check these connections as well,
Plus look at the CE panel under the dash and see if water tell tale drips are going onto the CE panel from the bottm of the blower box. If so then the blower box needs a reseal ,dont let the car get wet till this is done and get a cover for the hot post connection if you dont have one along with the hot post stud cover , use the parts from a 1988 S4 as they fit perfectly.
Also check the battery connections, Always disconnect the battery before working on the elex system ,

I had a similar problems with my 80 US Auto. It was a bad connector on the distributor wire. The wire runs from the distributor, across the front of the engine, to near the hot post. the connector is near the hot post and was falling apart. Quick fix was to pull it apart and put it back. that was a few years ago and hasn't caused a problem since. I still haven't replaced the wire/connector.

I have had the car for only about a year, and when I first got it,I did extensive work on it.Timing belt, water pump, filters, including fuel, various switches, stereo, etc.and when I was done it ran superb. At that time I didn't find any evidence of any water intrusion into the fuse/relay panel.Every connection that I removed in my work showed no signs of corrossion, which I thought odd for such an old vehicle.I will pull it into the garage and start the search.Does anyone have any thoughts on a loose ground, perhaps? It seems I have read this in other posts.

be sure and check the negative ground strap at its connection with the body, this sounds really familiar

Checked out the "green wire",and it appears to be the original, but it is in perfect shape,as is the connector, which I cleaned anyway. The connections at the post also were clean and tight.I cleaned the 14 pin connector, though it looked fine.I re attached all these, and checked the plug wires and coil, though I don't think they could be the culprit.I did have one bit of good fortune,I figured out where my slow power steering leak was.Loose clamp under the reservoir.I had a friend take the car in for an inspection stickertoday, and once again it stalled and refused to start until it was ready.Any other ideas?thanks.
