Post potential 928 buyer

ok this is where all you 928 owners get to go on about how great your cars are and why. I'm thinking of going to an 87/88 S4 from an 89 944 S2. What are costs like comparatively between the 2 cars? For example, 928 clutch vs. 944 clutch etc. Any insight is really appreciated. Thanks in advance

Question

Not sure. Some of the parts are interchangable (for example - the Hall Sender).

Regardless, the cost will be similiar for parts (although the 928 seems to have more sophisticated parts).

Expect a difference in performance as well. Your 944 will feel more like a turbocharged gokart compared to the 928. However, you will find pleany of power/performance, the ride much nicer, and handling will be - well, impressive to say the least.

If you pick up a nice example and well cared for, figure about $2k a year in maintenance over a few year period including wearables(tires, brakes etc...). If you pick up one that has been neglected, figure a couple thousand more in the first year to get everything in order. If you do all the work yourself, you can greatly reduce these numbers.

Yeah I think you're both right. I'm just afraid of the V8 on the 928... more cylinders means more power (theoretically) but also more labor when something goes wrong.

Well maintained engines rarely have problems. Most of the problems are wear items and electrical. Most fixes however, have been well documented on this board and others.

Are timing belts, water pumps, and brakes about the same between the 2 cars?

No, no, and maybe. The 928 T-belt should be replaced every 60k miles or five years )whichever happens first) according to Porsche. The 944 T-belt change interval is half that.

The water pump on a 928 is larger (higher volume). The brakes on a 928 differ from year to year. The S4 brakes are the same as those on a 944 Turbo. All others are different. The 928 GTS brakes are bigger than any that came stock on a 924/944/968. YMMV.

Ed,

Just to clarify, The S4 brakes are the same size as the brakes on the 1988 944 Turbo S and the 1989 Turbo (same thing, different names). The 1986, 87, and 88 (non-s) cars have smaller front calipers than the S4. Just a bit of trivia from a 944 Turbo guy that just bought himself a 928 today!
