Post I want a 928???

My 951 is as quick as an S4 (0-60 in under 5.5 seconds) and top speed is roughly the same (around 163 MPH).

So why am I getting a serious itch for a 928????

Do I need a shark?

That depends on what you want in a car. If you want a car for twisties, you might be better off with a 968. If you want a fast grand tourer with class, it's hard to beat a 928. There is no right or wrong - just preference.

In the late 80ies, a German magazine compared the available Porsche models and determined the 944 series to be the fastest and best handling on the track (even faster than the 911 at the time). Some people will tell you that the 928 had a lot more potential, though, which was later unleashed with the ClubSport, GT and GTS models.

Personally, I would not want to spend the money on a Porsche, and have the 4-cylinder sound. And I just love the looks of the 928 inside and out - to me it's the most beautifully designed car ever...

Drive them, and then decide!

Could it be that you would like to replace turbo "lag" with instantaneous torque ?

Yes, and then there is the engine and exhaust sound.... a whole different world.

Everybody 'needs' a shark.

I can't argue with the group. My 924 was killer in the twisties. My 944 had great acceleration and top end.
But my shark, well, I would like more power for acceleration. But nothing beats the drive! It's handling balance is better than the 944, at least that's what my brain tells me. I've found it easier to sling around a race track. The 928 is much heavier than a 924/944, so it let's me know when I'm overdriving the car. It's seems to be more forgiving also when I push the shark or my driving skills too far.

Badger,
Word has it that you can get this itch just like West Nile Fever.
Find one for sale, pull up in your 951 -after a spirited drive, of course-.
Walk around the sHARk, look at it from different angles. Go for a spin on the same road you rolled in on.
If it was meant to be... the look and drive should have you hooked.
Think of the 928 as a comfortable, hot, tourer with untapped potential. <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
Interest rates are down, by the way. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Cool

Badger...

You can make a 951 ridiculously fast if you don't care about things like rings. And they are light...

But there is an old saying: There's no replacement for displacement.

I just think that 928's don't get raced enough. I have seen fully prepped 928's. They more than hold their own on race courses, because Porsche designed them to be forgiving. Their handling limits are just as high as a 944/951/968's. And don't even get me started on the subject of Trailing Throttle Oversteer!

-I just know that when I pull up at a stoplight in urban Orlando, I can count on minivans, Hondas, ratty Mustangs, camaros, MR-2's, Jettas, Ford pickups, and dozens of others. When "Jett Lag", my '85 S2 comes to a stop, it is like Darth Vader just arrived. It doesn't matter that the Z06 'vette two cars up can outrun me...that rounded shape and gutteral rumbling exhaust note shuts them ALL down. That's fun...

And fun is what Dr. Porsche was all about, now wasn't he?

Yeah, I think what does it for me is the looks of the car. I had an '85 928 Euro S about 5 or 6 years ago and just looking at it got my heart going. And don't even TALK to me about that sound when I started it up in the morning!

I guess I decided to go with the 951 "S" because of it's quickness and potential over that of the 928. I can do 0-60 in, roughly, 5.4 seconds (just a guess...I'm chipped and dyno tested at 231.5 hp to the wheels) but the 928 DEMANDS respect on the road.

My head won the argument for which Porsche to buy and now my heart is giving me a hard time about it.

I wonder if my wife would let me keep the 951 and get a nice polar silver S4 5 speed?

Hmmmm...probably not.

Why don't you buy HER the nice polar silver S4 5 speed? That sounds like it would solve a few problems...

Jay,
That was my theory...
928 screen saver, printed out e-bay ads and flicks.
I suppose ...when my boss -maint.section- talked to Sharon at the communal Engineering/maint. breakroom and she couldn't find my truck in the parking lot it confirmed her worst fear.
The car was a minor issue when compared to the fact that hubby just went for a walk... .
Of course this might work both ways...

From my experience, this Shark Bite Fever or whatever can lay dormant in the host (me) for a period of 10 years or more (it was 1992 when I drove my ex-roommate's dad's 80 model 5-speed), then suddenly manifest itself like a Catagory 5 hurricane. Picking up my shark on Sat or sun.

If I was the wife, I'd forgive you... if I'd get to drive it!
