The Elusive 959
Detroit gents,
Keep your eyes peeled. On my way to the post office at lunch, I was amazed to pull up behind perhaps the most beautiful of sights, the butt end of a Red 959, turning left onto Auburn Road from Opdyke.
Phew....It was love at first sight!

Well, the Ferrari F40 was just an Italian muscle
car compared to the 959. The first Porsche model that really appealled to me, saw it at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1986 (?perhaps 7).

Shawn-
I think I mat have seen it too. Was it silver by chance? I saw one on 696 the day of our labor day picnic. Had I known how elusive it was I would have taken a picture. Driver was some old dude.

Lucky dog...rare, rare, rare.
Black-market, converted racer, or a body kit on a Carrera? If it's the real item, it's rarer than tasteful body work on a Honda.

Andrew,
It was red, rather than silver. It is possible that there are a few kit cars around, but who knows? I thought that there were more legal ones nowadays due to the relaxing of the regulations, a promise to drive < 2500 miles/year, and the replacing of the sequential turbos. Is it possible that more and more of these will be coming out of the garage? I hope.
BTW, the one I saw sounded nothing like a 993 or a 996. Very distinct sound.

Hey, just for fun, instead of buying four mint condition 928GTS', just pick up one of these...

Btw, apparently the regs have been relaxed...

well after looking at some of those pics, I think I saw something different. Not sure what, but I'll reseach it and report back. But that 959 does look sweet!

Hmm, I'm immediately suspicious of someone who stands to make that much money but has such an obvious lack of basic English composition skills.

Some old guy... <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
As opposed to some punk kid driving it?
I demand satisfaction!
Blunderbuss's in the sandpit at dawn!!!

FWIW
If there is any fire left in the boiler room you hope to die looking out of fearless, eye's with a look of suprise on your mug.

Wasn't it one of the first 959's that was stolen out of New Jersey and did a solitary Cannonball run? Beat Troopers across 3 states and finally turned up abandoned in California.
As reported in Time/Newsweek Magazines, new owner left showroom, parked in the driveway, ran into the house to show the wife when they came out, reportedly under 3 minutes, that puppy was GONE!
The final version 959 is a looker, had a well appointed interior - nice gauge setup, too.
190mph+ all wheel drive. Took #1 and #2 in the 1986 Paris-Dakar, believe it or not. These looked more like the 911's and I don't think these were turbo equipped.
Later versions were 450+ HP at 6500rpm , torque 370+ at 5500rpm, twin intercooled KKK turbo's on the later models sequenced with the second one spooling up at 4500rpm adding 150 hp to the 1st.
Anyone ever see how they mounted the '8' shocks or figured out that automatic lowering system?
I've heard that over a hundred mph the ride height auto lowered to 4.5 inches and that over rough ground could be raised to 7 inches.
These Porsches have held and increased in value.
What's not to like?
Wonder what ye olde 928's would have been like with factory, sequential, intercooled, turbo's, don't you?
