The manual shows yaw and pitch adjustments for the front piviot. If the the linkage is out of adjustment, combined with excessive play in the shifter/linkage/trans rails then shifting is sloppy.

In my opinion, the rave with the short shifter is it masks the root problems mentioned above.
I would think it would amplify them, no?

I have one in my race car and feel it is a tremendous improvement. The shorter throw makes missed shifts less likely in my opinion.

Usually the disadvantage is that it requires extra effort to shift, which is definitely not a concern in a race car.

I've driven a '79 and a GTS with the short shifter conversion and could not believe the difference from the huge stick that is stock. If/when I get a 5-speed, that will be the 1st thing I put in it.

I have a new short shifter sitting waiting to be put in, along with the momo shift **** that was on my car when I got it, that I have to figure out how to securely attach. will probably drill an indent in the short shifter to seat the litttle stud on that holds the **** on the shaft. Anxious to get it on and see what you guys are talking about. Maybe this weekend....

Ramora,
928 Specialist sells an adapter for aftermarket knobbies.
Shift **** Adapter

I wrapped a long strip of metal into a U-shaped piece and hooked it on top of the 928 shifter so the side Momo screws would hit metal before they bottomed out.

The Momo's I've dealt with have 3 axially placed locking screws. One or 2 of them will be trying to clamp onto the shifter from the side. The 928 shifter was too skinny for even the long Momo set screws.

The 79 shifter is longer but the pivot points are also farther apart, like in a short shifter. I kinda like the 79 shifter in my racer because it sits higher up closer to the steering wheel.

How high are these aftermarket shifters? There are 3 heights to stock 928s, early tall (79ish?) all others and the GT which is 20mm shorter. I've seen pictures of some aftermarket shifters that were freakishly short, what's the scoop?

Agreed, probably less benefit than most for the GT, but I love it.

Just put one in last week. It appears to shorten the throw ~15% in my GT, but it's more precise as well. Initially, it was very stiff and required more effort, but after some use, stiffness is reduced. Shift effort is still higher than any other car I've driven (as it was before the install), but whatever vagueness was there, it's gone.

Worth every penny.

Thanks, I have been wondering about this. I have a 90 GT now, but had purchased a short shifter for an S4 beforehand, so was wondering whether I should put it in or not. I really like the short shifter in my 928 race car. Sounds like it is a good plan for me too!

HTML Code:
Corvair vans, the shifter is several feet long
Many years ago I drove a Ford van from the fifties which also had a shifter several feet long; funnily enough it had first & reverse in the same place as the 928 -only 3 forward gears.

Jim, of course, is correct about the GT having a shorter shifter. I put a GT box in my 82 & I feel like my original shifter is at shoulder level.

That said, I installed the "Short" shifter in my 89 GT and it was a noticable improvement, well worth the money. Do the ball cup at the same time and the improvement will be VERY noticable.

Reference pictures for people. The ball cup is #7 on the picture. If that is warn it is loosey goosey, sloppy 2nds and 3rds and well you get the picture. The colored shifters are the "short" ones. note that moving the pivot points further apart shortens the length of the "throw". The first picture is just for various year comparisons.

BTW..the blue one is a Devek version short shifter vs the stock 89GT shifter...notice both length difference and the distance between the holes... A nice upgrade on my GT..and I need to do the same for my track car too..

I cut the shifter down on my 79 only. It was 3/4 of an inch shorter than stock shifter on my GTS. The 79 is an absolute dream to drive!!

I just put the short throw shifter (From Roger) on the GTS about a week ago along with my Paul Champagne shift boot. Much improved shifting for sure!! Notchier and a little stiffer, BUT, I need to do the shif ball cup on the GTS. I'm assuming that is where some of the notchy feeling is coming from. It's a hell of an improvement though!

The 79 with the tight shift cup, and 3/4 of an inch shorter than the stock GTS shifter, still shifts better than the short throw shifter on the GTS. The real test will be once the ball cup on the GTS is fixed. Either way, both shift better than any stock setup for sure!!

School bus shifters are a little shorter than the 928. I think it compares better to an old UPS truck.
