Red face Need help on troubleshooting..........

Hello All,

I started having a problem with my shark not starting about 2 weeks ago. One day it hadn't been driven since the day before and I ran a couple of blocks to the store and when I came out it would not start until about 5 min's of trying. A couple of days later it did it again after sitting overnite. Since then it has done it about 4 more times. It turns over fine but won't fire up. I check the fuel pump by switching relays and then the jumper and this seems to be fine. Today it did it again and I put a timing light on both the coil wires and they show no spark.
So my question is where do I go from here?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

O.K. Jim,

I switched the 2 relays out and still no spark. Is there a list or order of things I should check as things pass or fail?

Thanks for the help,

O.K. Jim or anyone,

I finally got back to checking out the car. The relay that was in the 12 position had a part# of 928.615.203.00, which doesn't match the # that the 928 specialist site shows. So, I put the correct relay in there and still no spark. As far as the alarm goes, I actually removed that about 6 months ago. I also pull both of the plugs from the computers and all the terminals were nice and shiny and snapped back in tight. I am terriable at troubleshooting so any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated or maybe even a sequence of checks that should be done from this point.

Thanks,

Well, per Jim's advice I thought I check the ignition relay by switching it out with another and it didn't make a difference. Brian G. said to try and jumper this relay and PRESTO, it fired right up. I then turned the car off and replace the same relay I just pulled out and it fired up again.
So, am I looking at a relay problem or maybe something else?

Thanks Jim, Brian and Bernie for your help,

Intermittent electrical issues suck the big one!! Intermittent relay issues are usually "contact contamination" issues, meaning burnt contacts. I'd switch out the ignition one for for a jumper and eliminate that variable. I think that the jumper also eliminates the anti-theft issue. (Jim??) The next item is the EZK and I don't know any diagnostic aside from swapping with a known good one.

Brian,

Will having that jumpered all the time cause any problems?

Thanks again,

I don't have the schematic in front of me at the moment, but I don't think that keeping it jumpered for a few days will be an issue. What the relay does is take the current load off of the switch, which is the ingition (key) switch in this case. I don't see that switch (or most of the Bosch switches) as being all that electrically flimsy, although I guess I could be wrong.

The question is whether the relay is fed from the "switched" BUS or not. One would think it were. If so, the jumper can just be left in place. If not it should be pulled at shutdown. A quick check of each of the 2 jumper-wires for power, when the ignition (key) switch is on and when it's off, will reveal that answer.

Good luck!!
