Default New guy/Sports Exhausts

Hi guys, first post so hello to all, I'll drag it out a bit so you know who I am and what I'm doing with my 928. I drive a '96 registered right hand drive GTS which is currently being fairly thoroughly overhauled after 90 thousand miles of being pounded up to London and back every day by my Dad, who has moved on to an Italian which has already broken down more times in one year than he experienced in his 25 years of 928 ownership.

Once the new suspension is fitted, the cambelt has been changed, the HVAC is working, the brakes are fixed, the electrics are all electriccing, the body is straight and the interior has been retrimmed, I will no doubt be very poor, however I might be able to scrape a few quid together to buy and fit a sports exhaust.

Do any of you guys have any experience with whats good and what isn't? I race Caterhams around the country and the GTS will have to convey me up to 500 miles in a day, most likely ridiculously early in the morning and after 5 hours on track when a booming exhaust is likely to give me an aneurism. I want to be able to hear the tone of the engine without it driving me insane on the motorway (freeway).

Are there any decent systems that fit the bill? Or am I going to have to go Custom? I've heard Borla do a system for the 928, most other manufacturers tend to look at you blankly when you say Porsche 928 (well at least I imagine they do, its hard to tell over the phone)

Cheers guys, look forward to discussing lots of shark stuff with you in the future

OJ

There is some stainless set available in UK IIRR. Can't remember company name. There is some talk in archives. AFAIK no one in here has their setup. There isn't really much need. Other options are cheaper and many ways better.

Change cats to X-over and metal sport cats, leave rest of the system stock. This is by far easiest and best option to gain few more ponies and keep sound in tolerable level. If sound is too quiet its easy to install RMB in place of rear muffler. In case even that's too little sound install MSDS headers.

My thought is to go to a local exhaust guy and pick his brain. Depending on the emissions you restricted too may dictate what you can do. So, ask the local guys there and see what they suggest or have done in the past. Also, it doesn't have to have been to a 928, any 87 cyl car ideas will help.

Good luck

Hi OJ,

An RMB would probably be the 1st (and easiest) way to get a bit more noise from your GTS. There are several good options from both 928 Independant specialists and custom exhaust places - Hayward and Scott in Essex come very highly recommended http://www.haywardandscott.com I've got an RMB on my GT which sounds fab. If you're anywhere near south London, you'd be more than welcome to pop around and have a listen.

There is a UK based source for X Pipes - but your GTS will probably need CATs. The factory ones will be knackered if the cars done a lot of city driving, so you'll need aftermarket ones if you want an X Pipe. PM me and i'll pass on contact details.

I would also recommend you join the mail list on www.928.org.uk - great technical resource for us UK folk and there's a good group of 928 owners in the south east.

Yep, i'm based in East Surrey, and the car is in with Leigh in Earls Court. Great guy... Although patience is a must if you take a 928 to him, he hates working on the bloody things! I'll PM you

Yes, GTS will need cats although I'll soon be lucky enough to have access to a 2 post lift, so an opportune 'swap' wouldn't be a problem... The bloody thing's been iffy on the emissions test for a while, so probably points to knackered cats, although Leigh says GTS's can be a bit marginal anyway.

I signed up to 928.org.uk, but I have to say the format confuses me slightly!

Blue Flame (?) IIRC in UK was offering one- I think it was basically a straight system though.

I think I'd be eyeing a Supersprint setup, or custom. Techart once offered a system, but I think they aer long since discontinued/NLA.

paul anderson has an off the shelf rmb for your car, he is in stroud. rogers X pipe is where id spend my money though, if its the same one that carl sells as well. i think the usa x pipe makes more bhp. the blue flame system seems reasonably priced but it dosent offer more performance as far as im aware.

It's an email list - I forget how to register for the list despite having done three or four times in the last 4 years due to moving countries and hence email address. There may well be issues with new registrants at the Moment as Angus (who runs 928UK as a hobby) is migrating the email list and website to a new server and I recall he mentioned there were some temporary issues.

If you want to listen/hear a Blueflame system you need to get in touch with Jonathan Rackowe who lives in Ealing - his is the only 928 I know with one.

Right, so based on this thread i'll start with a x-over pipe and sport/de cat, then if its not enough I'll go for an RMB setup

Thanks guys

Rog, I'll be in touch. Cheers

Cats get clogged, which does not make them less effective, but they can sap a lot of power - my GT was loosing up to 65bhp due to its 220k miles cats...

Rubbish! My GT lost its cats a while ago and still passes emissions with flying colours! Most likely, the MAF is iffy or the LH ECU is on its last legs.Get in touch with John Speake at www.jdsporsche.com who can help with all things electronic on the 928...

Really? I'm pretty sure the car has required a 'sympathetic' MOT tester since its 2nd or 3rd MOT!

Surprised it could drop that amount of power! Had it dyno'd a while back at Surrey Rolling Road and it had only dropped 25-30bhp, so things can't be that bad

if you have a sympathetic mot tester then you might not need to fit cats to pass the visual inspection. id agree with alex though, maybe the idle setting thingy is out or else the maf is aged?? as for the exhaust its a difficult subject as sound is so subjective - a bit like ride quality and what kind of suspension you run. it sounds like you are tipping some amount of cash into the old girl, i hope you have enough left over for the exhaust! ive hardly heard two 928s that sound the same after they have had exhaust mods, im going to contradict myself now and say maybe you should just get the rmb if you are keeping stock suspension the sound is not too loud and will fit with the car as a GTS. my personal preference however is for louder, i spent sunday driving to manchester with alex in his GT with very little sound deadening, an rmb and an x pipe and drove back in the orange beast with x pipe and custom exhaust after that and no sound deadening
