Cup II's and Widest Tire Advice
i searched about 50 post for tire recommendations for the Cup II's but didn't find what i wanted.
i currently have
205-50-17 front
255-40-17 rear
front wheels are 7" and rears are 9"
what is the widest i would be able to run comfortably (no track/racing)
on these Cup II's and my car-'89 ??????
thanks in advance..

225-45 front and 255-40 rear is what I have with a 7.5 and 9 inch width. You could go to a 275 in the rear but the requisite reduction in the profile percent makes it a little more hard to find. 18's give you more options. G

Daymon: quality of tire is more important than quantity. I am using Bridgestone RE 050s now and the traction is waaaaay better than bargain Kumhos.

205's are too narrow for any car with a V8 up front.
Go at least 225....maybe 235.
Some 235's tires will fit better than others on a 7.5" wheel. I think that that sidewall design has something to do with it.
On my previous tire/wheel setup, I ran 225 Mich. SX MXX3 on 7.5" fronts with no problems at all. The wider contact patch seemed to help a bit with the tramlining that I was experiencing from incorrect offset (Boxster S wheels), but didn't eliminate it.

Didn't see it in your post, may have missed it, but are the fronts 7" or 7.5" wide? If the wheels didn't come off a GTS, they are more than likely 7" wide. You said the current fronts are 205-50-17's and the rears are 255-40-17's, that is a common 911 set up. When I bought some 993 wheels for my car, they were the same size tires on 7" wide front wheels. If yours are only 7", you probably shouldn't go any wider than 225's, but check with the specific tire mfr. you end up going with. www.tirerack.com has a good listing of tire specs. for most of the mfrs. If the wheels are 7.5", then you should be OK with a wider (i.e. 235) tire.

It will say on the rims what size they are.
if they're Porsche originals, there'll be numbers on either side of the filler valve.. if not, then you'll be forced to look at the back-side of the spokes (which means taking a wheel off).
e.g. ET65 is 65mm offset, and 7.5J is a 7 1/2" wide rim.
I'm running the previous owner's selection of 235/40/17 on the front, and 255/40/17 on the rear on 7.5J and 9J front/rear respectively.

thanks Hilton..
i looked again and i can barely see a 7 on the front wheels. these have been powder coated and makes it a little hard to see.
appreciate the heads up.
