Yup, first guy under a car when there is trouble, and one of the first to welcome me into the community.

If I've jumped to the wrong conclusion I apologize. I do not know Wayne and it's difficult to ascertain someone's intent based on having no personal experience with that individual. Now if Carl or Jim had said what Wayne said I'd have known they were joking around. Goes to show you have to be careful about what/how you say things on these forums.....

I still don't like side pipes on a 928.

A funny story: In '04 WG got hassled by the local police at SITM for "being a trouble maker" just because he pulled out of the hotel parking lot with a little throttle. The side pipes have some bark!!

Chuck: you coming to SITM? You could ride with me, and I would stand a chance of winning the concours if people think my car is one of yours!

Don't know yet. Depends if I get in to PCA Parade here in Charlotte less than a month after SITM. Don't want to have to do double duty cleaning the frog..... If I get in to Parade I may just come up on Saturday and hang out.

PS. Wayne, I'll be looking out for you and something sharp in your hand.

So here we are at SITM hotel central with a parking lot full of sharks. There's a carwash elss than 1/4 mile from the hotel. It's just down the road. I trundle off to the carwash and in the middle of the carwash is Mr. Sidepipes being read the riot act by some ossifer. You know it's not a good sign when you pull into a carwash and there's a CrownVic and it's blue and red all a flashing.
You have never seen a more meek bunch of guys and gals washing their cars.

Glad that Wayne showed extreme respect for the ossifer so he didn't showed any interest in the rest of the motley 928 crew there.

Any one of the "Lores of SITM"

Ernest -

I remember that incident. I elected to stay at the hotel parking lot, checking the flow rate on a can of Coors'.

Are there any exhausts and pipes specifically made for 928's or do you have to adapt from other applications? I don't want something super loud and I saw in one of the pictures that it looks like there may be some sort of muffler liner.

to answer your original query---

sound--like a Shelby Cobra.....without the (removable) mufflers, like a super comp door slammer...loud as heck

looks--awesome

maintenance--wash and wax, chrome polish. no big deal

all sidepipe installs are custom one-off deals. nothing made specifically for 928, including dual exhaust systems other than OEM. as for under car duals, you can go as big as 3 inch pipe. mufflers are your choice. CATS are no big deal either, as there are racing CATS as big as 4 inch diameter now with no back pressure.

mine are Hooker Header sidepipes, available from Summit Racing, mufflers not included. the mufflers are removable for racing. mufflers are available in quiet and racing versions. I have the racing mufflers in mine. Hooker claims the racing muffler equipped system makes more hp than open headers. Future system to include MSDS headers, cutting off the header collector and connecting each primary tube to each sidepipe primary tube (currently only one sidepipe tube is open/connected).

yes, they will burn unprotected legs. ground clearance is not really an issue until crossing speed bumps. car jacking points are obstructed by pipes. forget listening to the stereo (unless you have an amp-ed system). neighbors will be pissed off for you setting off their car alarms when passing by. 928 purists will hate them.

That just about covers it....?

And no, unfortunately I won't be at SITM as originally planned. The car is undergoing extensive paint and body refinish, and it won't be ready until sometime late this summer.......

Russ,
Hitch a ride with one of the Texas Posse if you'd like. There's normally a 'decent' crowd heading East for SITM. Not sure if you'd like 'em but very high probability that you'd have a GREAT time, car or not.
It's the crazy people.

Wouldn't you want to meet Wayne. He's a blast. A real one man party. Unless he's detained in the back of a police cruiser somewhere.

WAYNE! Slow down going through NJ Turnpike.

Feeling harmless, I just want to blast in my toys Ernest, however cruisin' 85 and 89 mph straight along and alone are for me nothing fast enough to be cited as going wrecklessly . The sidepipes I have, came with perforated guards, no burns ever, Russ' car will be a different burn story I'm sure if/when he decides to hookup the tubes.

A few issues with side pipes.......

1: They will get very hot and you'll end up with nicely scared ankles...or your wife-date will...(like vipers)
2: They are LOUD, which might be good or bad...
3: If you live in a smog state it will never pass....

Actually, the tubes are hooked up (one of them each side), just no headers yet.

right after I put them on, told the wife to make damn sure to watch herself when getting out. in fact, told her this just as she was opening the door. Sure enough, got one leg on the pipe and she was broke in-----I did tell her. Must have been lost on the translation somewhere...?

Wish I could go to SITM, but new job and paint resto thing is really preventing it. I could get the time off work, but the car is just not going to be ready anywhere near SITM time, so I'm stuck.
