Cool Phine Sounds-

Yee haaaa!

WELL: I just got back tonight to my home from a week of debauchery in South Florida. South Beach, Fort Liquordale, and Key West will never be the same~

[I've said that before; every time I go back they are just as sleazy]

This time, I stayed at Atlantic Shores Resort in Key West. Their pool and pier are clothing optional...and I took them up on their offer. Tonight I'm brown as a berry...

everywhere!

AND my nudity got noticed about 25 seconds after my arrival at the pool. 25 years old, short brown hair, and less than 110 pounds. I'll dispense with the incredibly OT details...just suffice it to say that it is a VERY good thing that I don't require much sleep.

Anyway, I feel sorry for the little plasic tube with bellows that allows the wiring to enter my drivers door. Somehow, it got caught and kinked, instead of entering the door smoothly when I pulled it closed-

[OH thats so sexual...]

-this caused the wiring to the speakers and the mirror control to be pulled from their connections...looks like the door panel comes off for the 37th time.

I wasn't about to start pulling it apart while parked along Collins Avenue in SOBE- that would not project the proper shirt-open-casually-wealthy South Beach Image. That and I didn't have a 10 mm socket handy~

So its kewl...I never adjust my mirrors, my stereo sucks and the Borla exhaust is my music anyway. I've been told I must have been Italian in a previous life- I variously live on pasta, and I have this thing for the sounds of powerful machinery, and this is apparently a characteristic of Italian heritage-

I'm not Italian, in fact I was born in the horrid state of Michigan which means that I am 100% American.

The sound of my Borla at 6000 RPM always raises the hairs on the back of my neck and I love to listen to the sound of interesting cars as they pass. South Beach is the place to show up in a "voiture" that matters, so you get to see [and hear] quite a few wild cars. Porsches are everywhere...de riguer pretty much, but the 928 is a rare bird and the intriguing sloping shape accompanied by the Winston Cup soundtrack always gets attention. A bar-room brawler in a perfectly tailored Armani suit.

-I somehow always end up getting marks on my white bell-bottom jeans. I can't imagine how you folks with linen colored leather keep it clean~

Well, to finally get to the point, I spent the day driving the 375 miles from Key West to Orlando. Along the way I encountered two interesting cars-one that I like and one that I think is heinous ugly. Amazingly, both sounded fantastic-

[I bet the drivers of both cars have headaches tonight too~]

When I was about 10, I was riding with my parents to Florida, cruising through the wilds of southern Kentucky. The 1972 Ford LTD was running fine. I remember looking out the windows at the rock walls of hills blasted through for the interstate highway, watching for little water falls from springs that spontaneously appeared from the stone. There was a tire sound...it slowly got louder and louder over a 20-30 second period...I remember wondering about it as it occured, turning toward my dad in the drivers seat. He apparently noticed, leaning forward, looking at the instruments and then my mother, who had a perplexed look on her face. Then the car started vibrating...my dad figured out what was going on and pulled over. Diagnosis: flat left rear tire.

Dad pulled over, jumped out, and procured the spare. He had the tire fixed at the next exit, and since it was lunch time anyway, we clogged a few arteries at McD. It was really only about an hours delay. But I'll still never forget that odd sound...

Well, today I heard it again...kinda. In Miami, there is a long section of I-95 with tall concrete walls instead of a median. The road through there is 4 lanes in each direction-one being an "HOV" or high occupancy vehicle lane that is off limits unless you are traveling with a friend during weekday rush hours. I choose to treat it like the left lane on Sundays like today, and only entered it to pass. I was cruising in the third [non-HOV] lane today, windows open, enjoying the reverberation of my Borla exhaust off of said concrete divider wall. Slowly, that tire sound started to occur....

I'm like "What the hell...?" and started looking around. The car was driving fine- no extra throttle to maintain the speed, and it was going straight as an arrow [a testament to my eyes: I aligned it myself in my garage after I changed my motor mounts/steering rack in March!]. And the sound...it even sounded like the word "tire".

tiiiiiiiirrrrrRRRRRREEEEE!

I looked to the left- and saw the source of the sound. A white Lamborghini Diablo VT had surfaced from traffic and appeared abeam my door. The two guys in it were checking out "Jett Lag", and I saw the driver lean forward to take a look. He cruised next to me for a mile or so, then gently urged his car forward and worked his way through traffic. I was already doing about 80, and since I have my oil cooler basically mounted externally [like: rigged in order to get the car on the road....], I certainly didn't challenge or try to keep up. Not that I would anyway...first of all, that is totally LOW-CLASS, and I'm not in the habit of thinking that my S2 could keep up with 500 hp V12 Italian exotics....

The sound of that car was incredible...but not ultimate. I am of the opinion that the best sounding automobile engine is the V8. V12's sound a lot like V6's to me- this Diablo was like that. Sadly, the worst sounding vehicles are V10's- an engine configuration that I find fascinating.

The Lamborghini obviously had some sort of aftermarket exhaust...though in this application it was more than just a little amateur...it was just plain loud! It looked like he basically mounted four rice-rocket motorcyle mufflers [I think they actually said "Muzzy" on the sides~] at the back of the car, jauntily angled upward with end tips that angled horizontally. The sound WAS LOUD! , to the point of it being TOO! If those guys in the car didn't have earplugs in, then they have NO hearing tonight!

The other Phine Sound today actually came from a new Nissan 350Z. This particular car did his best to run a few other cars off the road and in general make an ******* of himself just so that he could show up in my rear view mirror. And then he came along side, 19 inch chrome-plated wheels flashing in the afternoon sun....He looked over at me...

I looked at him, then forward. My mind roamed around the oil cooler that is actually a gm part from a chevy Blazer, and was mounted....

WELL- not really mounted at all! I used it to connect both ends of my oil tubes so that I could use the non-cooler radiator that the nice folks [specifically Jim Bailey] at 928 Intl. sent me.

[They sent me a "used" radiator for $300- used about 5 minutes...it looked f*cking new...thanx Jim!]

The oil cooler is wedged in there...I put an old sock against the bottom, and one against the top so that it would not buzz a hole in the plastic end tank or the power steering reservoir. It is making contact with the lower radiator hose, but it appears that it realy is not doing any damage. Again...totally hokey, but it allowed me to use the car for the trip and keeps oil from going everywhere. At the same time, it is obvious that oil cooling is not taking place, so I simply have made a point to not drive the car hard. No racing for Normy- <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

ARRRGGHH! A new 350Z would be an inviting target. Especially at higher speeds, on an open Florida interstate-no cops or other cars around, I would certainly be safe and comfortable beating the living hell out of him up to about 125 mph [my personal max]...an easy and satisfying victory!

Doubly so because I HATE the way these look. I've really always liked the slot that the Nissan/Datsun Z cars have occupied...re: 6 cylinders, 150 hp, light, and with a tight edgy style. The problem is that other than the original 240Z, I feel that Nissan has totally mangled these cars...and the latest Z is probably the worst. My hatred revolves mostly around the door handles...which have all the class of some Civic that a 20 year old here in Orlando has customized: lately, they take to going to junkyards and pulling parts from white cars and adding to their cars. It looks like the handles are just tacked on- they stick out horridly and are even in the wrong direction! The headlights are ok, but the front turn signals are goofy...and I swear they were going for a British flag motif for the rear end- it looks like they wanted for all the lines of the rear to come from one point around the license plate. Thus the weird tail lights, and the "hyena" rear end.

Yuck....

But Nissan has been accused of having one of the best V6's ever built. Jim Pond built an unlimited class air-racer around a pair of 1000 horsepower version turbocharged Nissan 3.0 liter V6's...it had some problems with development, but these two V6's [total 6.0 liters] were theoretically capable of keeping pace with Rolls Royce Merlin/Griffon based aircraft engines with displacements that started at 27 liters...

The only 6 cylinder that I think sounds better is Volkswagen's VR6- it has a 4 cylinder buzz at idle, but produces a V8-like rumble at wide open throttle. 15 degree V6 that fires like a 60 degree engine- the sound effects come from the fact that the exhaust manifold is on one side of the engine, and the intake is on the other.

Anyway, that 350Z had a wild exhaust...and he wanted to race something fierce. And I would have been more than happy to demonstrate the basic supreriority of the V8 engine to him and his girlfriend, but I was more interested in NOT having the whole thing under my hood come apart and I was a long way from home.

BAH! I let it lay...

Oh well. I have to say...THAT car had a nice sounding exhaust! He got on it and it screamed "ARRRRGGGGGGHHHH" in that particular "black key on the piano" tone that V6's always seem to have [3 exhaust pulses per rotation versus an even set]. It sounded similar to the Lamborghini, but more direct: The Diablo sounded loud but muffled- the Nissan sounded direct.

You know, funny thing: I've seen Diablos and Lamborghinis in general in Orlando and have thought little about them- Ron Rice of Hawaiian Tropic fame drives his Countach and Diablos around Daytona Beach all the time. They're fantastic and they are treats, and If I win the lottery, after paying off my house and setting up college trust funds for all my little cousins, I'll buy a Countach. But not for its sound...

My current 928 sounds better!

OK. So, I'm here in Orlando, and the best sounds I can hear come from a mile away..."Earth Day Birthday 10" is playing, and all the major acts are there, including Godsmack and Sevendust. I'm going to go outside and listen to them from a distance....gawd I need a beer!

Normy:

When I was in Florida the other week, I took the wife and kiddies to Disney for a day. I actually wondered whether I'd see a (your) 928 on the highway. My wife thinks I have a mental illness caused by the 928.

Anyway...my kids thought the plane next to the highway with its **** up in the air near that "Fantasy of Flight" place was neat.

Glad to hear you're having so much fun in the sunshine state. Maybe we can meet when I'm there again next Easter.

Too bad your car wasn't 100% as the 350Z has pre-S4 performance numbers and could have caught you off-guard if not on your game. According to your story, it doesn't sound like you were, either!

Glad you had 'phun'; reminds me of college spring break...
