Default 17" or 18" Wheels

I am been using Search to try and find as much information as I can (this includes going through all the pages of the 928 Wheels post). Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything definitive to answer my own questions.

Background: I am currently running the 16x7 Cup wheels with a 225/50R16 front and rear tire set-up (I inherited the original owner's selection of wheels and tires). The rear is set-up with the factory spacers. I am not fond of the 16" as it does not "fill up" the wheel wells very much. The rear wheels look too "set in" on the inside even with the wheel spacers. I am looking for more aggressive, wide-out stance to match a big-*** of the 928.

I am looking at purchasing a used set of the 997 5-spoke factory wheels:

Fronts: 18x8 57mm offset w/235/40R18
Rears: 18x10 58mm offset w/265/40R18

I used Andrew Olson's handy-dandy wheel-fit spreadsheet calculator (thanks Andrew O!). It looks like everything will fit.

1) Does any one have pics of this wheel set-up on your 928 OB that you can share?
2) Any thoughts on the use of 17" versus 18" wheels?

I would apprciate any of your comments or ideas. Thanks in advance!

Quite a few of us have those exact wheels on our cars - they fit like a glove.

Same questions here.

Is there a chart for rim sizes in correlation to the size tire you can run. I know a 235 on a 7" rim is to much, will wear the center of the tire out. What will fit on a 7.5, 8, 9, 10" rim and not be to narrow or to wide to cause excessive wear or handling issues?

Ive been watching for the same setup or a set of twists to replace my factory wheels.

Check with the tire manufacturer, they are not all the same. Yes there are guidelines, still better off checking the specs for whatever tire you want.

There are too many variations between brands and models. Center wear is most likely caused by too high pressure, not size. For most tires, 235 on a 16x7 or 17x7 should be perfectly fine.

I will say that 235 on my 7" PD's is to large. Too much tire is past the rim compaired to my front 225's.

I ran a 235/45-17 on a 7" wide porsche cup wheel and it was too wide 225 is the most you'll want to go on 7"

My standard commute to smoothed paved, 10 miles each way, no potholes.

Great call on the potholes

I ran a set of 17" on my 1982, and I thought they fit the car very good. I was able to put some 265x17x35 TTs in the rear and they filled the wheel wells. On my '91 S-4, I chose to go with the 18" TTs first and then changed to the 18" Sport Designs. I considered going with 19", when a friend of mine decided to sell his 5 spokes. After I had an opportunity to price the tires for the 19" wheels, which are much more expensive then the 18". $$$$$ was the motivating factor in my staying with the 18"

I have the exact same setup on my S4 for almost 2 years now....they fit perfect....dropped right on with ZERO rubbing...even with the beefy 235 front tires at full lock!! Exact same size tires too (I wish mine were michelins)....I'm quite happy with them...about the only bummer is the tall 265/40-18 tire is about a 26.3" tire....so it does raise up the rear of the car a touch when compared to my old 24.7" tires.....it has a slight negative effect on gearing too by making it a shade taller.....6.7% to be exact.....but I'm used to it now....heres some pics

Go big or go home Baby

Personal preference, I like 18's...I have them on my 951 and they are perfect. I have a set of Carrera III 18's for the 928 if/when she needs them...if I can ever get the factory finish off the intake manifold...MOTHER!
