Default Testing for Exhaust Gas in Coolant

Actually, it's my BMW 325i that I'm concerned about, not my 928. A buddy gave me one of those testers that sucks up a sample of the air above the coolant. It looks like a big syringe you fill with a colored fluid. If the fluid changes color, it's an indication of combustion products getting into the coolant. Only thing is that the instructions seem to assume that your radiator has a cap built into it-not an overflow bottle. I don't know if the test is as effective if you're not sampling at the radiator. Has anyone used one of these things before? Do they work?

Hi

I have used the Snap-On version of that for years and it looks exactly the same..

It makes no difference whether in rad or overflow bottle, they both work..

Do this...

Get engine up to FULL NORMAL temperature with overflow cap OR rad cap OFF.

DO NOT GET ENGINE TO TEMPERATURE THEN REMOVE CAP OR YOU WILL GET A FACE FULL OF BOILING WATER !!!!!!!!!!

Then put in the correct amount of blue fluid to the tube (YOU DO NOT FILL THE TUBE), make sure its ONLY up to the level mark...

Then push tube into overflow neck OR rad neck and use the little puffer to draw gases THROUGH the blue fluid...

Do it for around 1 minute...

Then if it stays blue its fine...

GREEN means a problem ...

YELLOW means a MAJOR problem...

It reads combustion gas which should be nowhere near the cooling system !!!

All the best Brett

Despite the warnings, EVERYBODY learns this the hard way.
