IIRC, $250-something each for H4s and $280-something for H5s.

How much for light does the 8 inch E code headlight throw out over the 7 inch E code?

i dont think there is as big a difference there.

Apparently going from US lighting to Euro lighting is the big step. But going from 7" to 8" euro is less dramatic

Yeah, if all you're after is a lighting improvement, switching to e-codes will have the dramatic effect.

The lighting difference is nominal, probably not even visible without measuring equipment. I've had both, and the 7" e-codes I have now are visually identical to the 8" and actually better than the HIDs I have in the Mini. They have a much wider beam pattern, clearly delineated breakpoints, and the distribution is remarkably even with no hotspots. The only real difference is the self-leveling of the HIDs. With a wiring upgrade and relays, you could land an airplane with them.

To my mind, the only reason to go with 8" is cosmetic. You like the look. Otherwise the $430 difference makes no sense.

I bought a used pair for $200. One was broken when delivered. I searched car-parts and picked one up for $50.

For those of you with S4's and newer, do you really feel that the lighting in the car is inadequate? For a 20 year old car I'm actually shocked at how good the lights are. The high beams are amazing as compared to our two Honda's.

Good question, I dont feel the need to upgrade. I would if the lights were pitted like the fogs, but something about the retractable lights, is that they are never going to get stone chips during the day so mine still look great.

Fog lens's though is another story.

Yeah the fog lenses definitely take a beating. Mine aren't too bad (low mileage) but they were dirty on the inside and disassembling and cleaning everything made a big difference.

The only major issue I see with the headlights is that the develop a light haze over time (seals go bad probably) which makes them look old.

Personally, I found the 8", while delivering the same sharp cut-off as the 7"(Also Bosch E-code), distributed the light more evenly and over a noticeably wider range left-to-right. The high beams also light up long, straight roads better. All else being equal, a larger reflector will get more light to the road and the 8" has an almost 30% larger(Surface area) reflector.
