Rear Deck Latch Lock Removal
I have to replace the rear deck lid portion of the hatch latching mechanism. It is easily enough removed from the car, but I cannot see how to remove the lock from the mechanism in order to retain the single-key situation. Apparently, it is necessary to twist the lock a small amount to align the locating tab with the notch that will allow extrication, but I cannot see what prevents this rotation. The manual says to "remove the pins" in the lock-body but doesn't show a picture of what "pins" they mean. If they mean the 2 small "paperclip diameter" sized pins in the round, black part of the housing, how are they removed? If not..... what pins?

Further, since the latch housing is brken in a number of places, and since the "alarm" unit is about $500.00 and the "non-alarm" unit is $150; is the only difference the key-unit? and can I order the non-alarm unit and swap in my alarm switch to maintain the alarm function AND the same key?

Hey Brian..Hows things in Calgary..I too have a broken lock..the two pins are in that black shroud if I remember correctly and they will come out ..paper clip size yep thats them..your alarm key is different it is longer and operates the switch at the end of the latch..There are two scews that hold the swich to the housing but to get at them you have to remove the black shroud piece..the two pins a pain in the butt..Be very careful its white metal and dont break the latch like I did Good luck...ps the porsche dealer in Toronto told me that most problems with that latch are due to corrosion and just require a good cleaning and lube...regards Bill 84 928s

Bill, it snowed last night and stayed.... end of P-car season, I guess. I got the 2 small Phillips-head screws out of the lower part of the housing (which is in 3 pieces already) but that didn't release the lock/switch mechanism. I'll get out the mini-side-cutters and see if I can pry those pins up outa there.

Why do I get the feeling that I'm talking to myself
I found the "pin" camouflaged under a bit of crap in the lower face of the housing. It's a headless, sloted machine screw that engeges some portion of the lock-unit to prevent its turning in the housing. Once it is unscrewed, the lock-unit turns and pulls out very easily.
Unless I miss my guess, the big black aluminum housing is the same for both the alarmed and non-alarmed applications with the real difference being the lock/switch unit.

Brian, Thank's for working that one out before I get there! I'm stripping my hatch prior to fitting a replacement and I'm sure I would have got stuck on that one too.
Cheers

Apparently it's not quite so easy. I hear that the "alarm" unit's housing is nothing like the "non-alarm" unit's housing, so I'm hooped. That is unless there's a used one around? Big 3 here I come......... again!
