I have my 81 twin turbo insured for stated value of $25,500 through State Farm. They are coming tomorrow to look at the vehicle to make sure they are not insuring a POS. My premiums are cheap, since it is a pleasure only driver with a limit on how many miles I put on a year.

IMHO…I’d say poor resale value is directly linked to the 928 high maintenance cost. Often, the comments I hear from non-Porsche owners are directed towards the cost of upkeep, which quite honestly…I cannot argue or disagree with although personally, I’d say my shark is no worse then say an older 911, Ferrari, Lamborghini or Lotus and, I’m sure more comfortable to drive on long trips and easier around town.

After my first shark test drive some 10 yrs ago, I ultimately passed on buying what would have been an awesome mint 86 1/2 shark because after doing research on maintenance cost decided I wasn’t in a position financially to properly take care of the car. I would say the car being of front engine water-cooled vintage doesn’t bode well with 911 owners either although now I see they have also joined the ranks of “water-cooled”. I would also venture to say the 911 crowd had some animosity toward Porsche’s plan on replacing the 911 series with the 928 and finally, I believe in the beginning of the 928 history, the U.S. version lacked in horsepower compared to the European version which pissed off the U.S. Porsche crowd. Also, lets not even get into how expensive these things were toward the end of production.

I’ve always wanted a 928 since I was in High School deep in the woods of Alaska. I think it’s body design is timeless, interior functional and comfortable and mechanical a very dependable car if properly taken care of.

Personally, a $800 to $1500 lease payment doesn’t appeal to me for the return privilege of driving any new Saab, Volvo, Audi S4, BMW Z3, Z8 or any of the new Porsche series knowing all I’m doing is RENTING and, paying huge insurance premiums…talking about throwing money out the window. Who’s really ahead in the end? And no offense to any of you who do own one, two or maybe even all the above cars as I know a few do but for me again, I’d rather put that lease money into stock, house payment or the local pub.

I didn’t buy my shark thinking it was going to be an investment, help enhance low self-esteem nor really add two inches down below and I certainly don’t believe I’ll ever sell it for more then what I paid for it.

I simply bought it because I like it and thank God not everyone’s does. It makes it kind of special to me. My shark provides me with more personal value and fun then any of the “new fancy cars” could. Call me a non-conformist I guess.

Thumbs up

Just wait another couple of years so most of the 928s are over 25 years old & classic. Only 60000 928s were built top of the line Porsche flagship and lets not forget the car was driven by Tom cruise in Risky Business & Al Pacino in Scar Face both Classic Film. Let us not forget the new 911s & Boxters are liquid cooled instead of air for more HorsePower&Torque. Look at the design of the Boxter rear bumber and the 911 has similar looks and same great *** design. If the value has not gone up it has to do with people not understanding the 928 or the unknown. thinking a porsche is only air cooled and rear engined. Porsche parts are expensive no matter what kinda porsche you drive and reliability has to do with how you maintain the car. You can buy a new Mustang GT and pay over $400 a month for insurance, lease or payment, or you can get an 5 speed S4 and spend $200 a month for maintenance and smoke any New mustang GT on the road and when you get to a traffic light all heads are turned not at the Mustang but you. I don't wanna go to a party and find out every one is wearing the same expensive clothing! I wana be unique so when I drive a 928 it could take months or years when I see another one the road and honk thinking he must be cool like me. Now why would you pay over $45k for a Boxter! a used S4 or Gt is half the price with more Power and with some modification can even be faster than a 911. good news the 928 is back give it another couple of years they are going to put the new engine in the cars the SUV called Cayenne has the V8 already in production. 911 owners hate 928s because it cost more new and they probably could not afford it so they came up with the liquid cool & front engine excuse. 928 got the the Car of the year award. i know a lot of 911s were sold so did the VW bug but does that make a good car. I take a Geo metro over a old VW bug it gets 50 MPG it is more comfortable and faster with cheap parts. 928 is not just a car it is art. The car has over 4 times it's value in parts so I don't understand the Kelly Blue book Check www.nadaguides.com or www.edmunds.com and you get a higher value but a value of a 928 has to do with it's maintenace record because of the expensive parts. Majority of the cars go down in value but life is too short to drive a 911. The new 911 Turbo is my dream car because it is worth over $120000 I can sell it & buy a new home and have money left for another 928. LOL

Question

I liked the "life is too short to drive a 911" part!!!

Tim, you are a non-conformist! I actually think I could probably get 8k for my car after I move, but why? I'd just have to replace it with another. Now, if I could find a GT for 8k (yeah, right).

All I know is there is under $23,000 in my Twin Turbo and it doesn't answer to anything except a 993 TT or a 996 TT.

Why would I want a Boxter?, so I can look like every other wanna-be out there. I mean come on, I can run those over with my 5 cylinder Audi on the highway. I met a guy once who wanted to sell an 89 930 to get a Boxter. Some people just need to be slapped.

I second the new Audi S4 statements. Far too many of them now, no exclusivity, sort of like a Boxter or 996. I have less than $17,000 in my S4 and it will blow a stock V6 S4 out of the water, lets's not mention you don't see one on every corner.

Let's face it guys, for most out there, the Porsche is an image car. Ask some smart *** lawyer type about his fancy car someday and see if he really knows anything about it. That is the difference between an enthusiast and a status seeker. I don't even want to talk about Lexus drivers.
