For those of you who questioned a possible gas cap design; I'm going to pass on that project. I spoke with the shop I use and there are a couple issues. The design of the gas caps incorporate a locking mechanism (that clicking noise you hear) to prevent the cap from backing off due to road vibrations, etc and over tightening. The cap also provides ventilation for escaping gases.

These two factors will prove too costly in the tooling process to get right. Translation: too expensive in shop hours to get right; thus too expensive per unit to offer for sell. The idea is to provide a few products for us Porsche folks without it costing a weeks worth of wages. If I can't offer something reasonable enough that I would buy it, I'll let someone else give it a shot.

I'm on that fuel rail cover idea though.

Thanks again guys.

Got the plastic cover that Peter F was kind enough to point out was missing in my engine bay today.

Did a quick search for engine bay photos in the forum, to get an idea of how it was supposed to be mounted. If the numbers found in that search are anything to go by, it seems that roughly half the 928s are missing this cover...

Went to mount it on the car, and lo and behold what I found:

Yup, it's the original cover wedged in below the cables.

Here's the original cover back in place, held by the new plastic bolt I also got:

Cheers,
Erling

Default Hot or not ?

Just home from a 25 km (15mi) winter excercise drive (on dry roads). Couldn't go fast as such, but engine did reach operating temperature, and I got 1 or 2 bwaaaa moments.

Checked the temperature of the oil cap right after parking the car. It was warm. Not even close to being hot, and no problem at all having it in your palm!

Cheers,
Erling

Thanks for the update Erling! I didn't think we would have a problem, but I started second guessing myself.

BTW, awesome set-up on your car (judging by the avatar). The wheels, Euro sidemarker light delete, sleek color set against the ideal backdrop.

I just got my cap from Nicholas yesterday, very nice. The only change I will probably make to mine is to paint it the same color as the intake plenum on my engine.

To answer Randy V.'s question, yes it does get a bit too hot to handle after a drive on the freeway but not so much so that you could not use a paper towel or shop cloth to touch it and remove it. I'll have it on my car at the Socal karting event if any locals want to see it.

Nice! I am also thinking about rounding off the edges a bit on mine. I like the polishing, may just have to incorporate that into mine. Where did you get the small crest?

Very nice detail indeed! I wanted to do something similar, but then I wouldn't be able to offer them for sale with copyright infringement concerns.

I love it, nice job.

The crest is from the key head. I had an extra laying around. It's a little worn, but I have a new one on order with Roger. When it comes in I'll pop the worn one out and glue the new one in.

After the initial success of my little project, thanks to my Rennlist friends here, I sold out of the initial batch. Many of you who were left without one asked me to make a new batch, so I did.

Because college has me consumed with studies, I've entrusted them to another friend of ours here on Rennlist to sell, Roger Tyson. In my experience he's a super fast shipper and a friendly, easy-going guy to do business with.
