928 CAD Files / 3D scanning, reverse eng. / 3D modeling /
I didn't want to high jack the thread I was in when I saw people talking about this stuff so I wanted to give it its own thread.
I do 3D rapid prototyping SLA / SLS and short run tooling for a living.
I know a little about the 3d scanning / point cloud technology and have a contact that provides that kind of service.
I know there are other 928 owners that are engineers / designers that may want to collaborate on things in our spare time let me know.
There are certain parts that alway break , the air cover straps, the rubber part in the hatch lock and many other thing that we could work on if anybody has any ideas.
Regards
Matt

I am experimenting with casting high strength polyurethane in silcon molds at work...first 928 project will be the center grill support for 85-86, which is NLA.
I'd like to find out who does fibeglass for that stupid tray under the wipers and a modified "deflector shield" for up front (the one that protects the oild pan and alternator)

JEC_31 is it a CMM machine you run?
KK I work with silicone tooling also and I have been working on those same grill parts, I have thickened up the models a little but have not molded them yet. I don't want to heat my garage up to temp to make the material cure so I'm going to wait a month or two before I start molding. I'll try to post a picture of the bracket today.
One of my long time friends dose carbon fiber and fiber glass, I'm trying to get him motivated to help me with a few projects, he has done the GM soltis carbon fiber body and the Impala body for the GM power tour the last couple of years.

FWIW the center grill support is available from 928Int.
I am very interested in working/contributing towards a replacement for the plastic insert on the lower hatch lock.

That flimsy plastic tray under the wipers feels like it's made of the same stuff that's in chocolate boxes to keep the candy from bashing into each other.
Anyone work with them vac-formed Polycarbonate molds?

what silicon materials are you using for molds?
what material do you plan on using for the struts? I am using CONAP EN-1556 and I'll strengthen it with some "unwound" stainless bike cable if I need to. I get it in 400ml twin tubes with a mixing nozzle. I may try mixing in some glass fiber, but only as a last resort.
I built an oven, with ramp up and down controls in my garage, but I have yet to test it.
Rog100
Hmmm, maybe it is the two side ones that are NLA?
IF you have a real hatch part to donate (even in pieces) , I'll make a model and design an FDM tool for it. it is small enough I can get away with it on my company's Stratasys Machine. They're letting me have some leeway in what I do during the learning process. Mine has too many peices missing.
EW 928
Vacum formimg in my garage would be quite a PITA. Fiberglass I can do small parts, with cheap tooling (but it does stink)

Now this has potential!!!!! Producing certain NLA parts could be very profitable!!
Personally I would love to see some front fenders that still look like a 928, without huge flares sticking out, but will fit larger front tires....up to a 335 would be nice!! Hmm 335's all the way around...now that would be STUCK to the road!!

Hello All thank you for the interest in this thread.
ROG100 I know 928 international sell this part I bought it from them and nothing against them but the I wouldn't sell crap like that at my job I never questioned the part to them but I doubt it was a production part no molder that I have ever seen has made a injection mold with that low of quality and if it was a urethane part they should be using me anyway I have thicken the part up a little , i'm not done with it yet but when I mold it I will be using a very tough 90 durometer shore a material I"ll attach a picture.
Ew928 I was just at a trade show and found a few thermal mold company's that would be able to mold that part it's on my list to check out, I would need a 3D scan of the part to get it quoted or reverse eng. the data. I can work on this if there is enough interest.
kaptnknemo , I use a number of silicones Dow M2 is the one we use at my job, one that is common in the hobby world is smooth on, when tooling you want a very hard durometer.
IcemanG17 this post isn't a profit thing I'll tell you from being in this business in the quantities that we are talking about , you just think about a project and you lose your a$$. if we don't do this as a community it's not worth it.
If I do charge anything for these projects it's only to recover material costs, I am hobbyist and a car guy like the guy doing the Turbo here on rennlist, I do things because I like to fabricate and spend time in my garage.
IcemanG17 I know you have Dreams but if you think you can remanufacture a fender for the small number of people here that would be interested you have more cash to through away than I do, but we can look into it I don't want to say no to anything I'm calling them how I see,em

The small black part on the side is the hatch part I have already molded but I used a old broken part as a model I think I will reverse eng. the data to produce a nice clean part.

Yep. It's all about the X, Y, and Z.
Abilities:
1) Measure anything under 6 feet long or 5 feet tall, to within ~0.02mm - as long as we can come to an understanding on the two critical decisions:
> What orientating and aligning features are the measurements relative to?
> What known points are the measurements from?
For example: take a tape measure to see how long a plywood sheet is:
The tape-measure is going to be held flat relative to the surface, straight relative to the long side, and then of course from the edge of the sheet.
2) Scan 2D contours very well, if rather slowly, then layer multiple scans into a rough 3D model with my mad Jedi CAD skillz. It still takes me ~10 hours to accomplish what a newbie with a nice laser scanner could do in 10 minutes, and I'm bitter about that. Can output 2D or 3D CAD files in DWG, DXF, and IGES formats.
CF is where it's at. You know if you could get a CF hood done you'd have a group buy on this forum.

What about all the rubber seals for windows, etc? Wouldn't making some new ones out of siliocone be the way to go?

Anyone want to make fish?
I've had an inquiry from a company that needs a lure mold. I can do the machining and EDMing but have no way of scanning a model to make a 3d solid model.
Someone needs to scan a sample and generate a solid model. If you can do that pm me and I'll pass your name along to the customer.

Burning Brakes
I'm following this thread. I use Unigraphics CAD/CAM. I do cnc machining of protoypes and short run plastics. Delrin, ABS, Polcycarb, nylon, etc. Aluminum on occasion. I'm interested in doing some interior work for my car, if this happens my CAD files will be free for anyone intersted. If anything interesting comes up I may be able to help convert/share/change formats for files.
