I'm putting aftermarket cats on mine to prevent this. It's caused by spark failure on one bank of the motor sometimes.
Some on this board have suffered cat fires.
How bad was yours?

If its a second fire, then do not drive the car any more until you've identified and fixed the problem.

you should check your ignition system it is causing one side of your system to shut down and thus is letting raw fuel into your cats this lets them get super hot and cause a fire. Dont start od drive the car until you have this problem fixed and keep a fire extinguisher handy as well as a charged hose.

Morgan,
I thought you also said you had a line that was leaking and that the transmission was shifting really poorly. My guess was that your tranny cooler line was leaking and it got on the heat shield, so you had a fire.
Can you post a pic of the exact location of the fire?
I'm with Mr Merlin, don't drive it until we can get it taken care of. But in the meantime can you give us the exact location of the fire?

Ahh is this from a possible ATF fluid leak?? That could change drastically where to look for the cause of the fire

Cat fires are fun... my entire exhaust from the cat to the tail pipe was glowing red one time.

astonishingly thorough. (tk) Seems the general population was quite confused by the inquiry. Many turned away after posting a pithy, unworthy, comment with an arrogance typical of the obtuse. Many, many thanks. I am having it towed to an auto hobby shop at a nearby airforce base, I'm retired military, and follow your suggestions. grateful for your help.

I thought earlier that it seems others were more concerned with the "small fire" than he was. He asked for help on 1/28, then check back 4 days later. I guess being retired, he is on a different time table than the rest of us working stiffs.

The metal transmission cooler lines have rubber connector hoses near the cat. If one of those sprung a pinhole leak it could spray ATF which burns onto the cat BUT that might not be hot enough to ignite under normal circumstances. The far more likely fire is the running on 4 cylinders fuel in the cat which ignites the undercoating with alarming regularity on the 85-88 928s when the cat turns cherry red hot from the afterburner effect of unburned fuel and air being pumped into the ehaust.

Jim - please elaborate - I am now very nervous!

what Jim is referring to is that the hard lines that send ATF fluid from the cooler to the trans have sections that are connected with flexible rubber lines and over time the swaged factory fittings begin to leak or the lines themselves begin to split, thus the spraying of fluid .
The flexible lines run near the front of the cats on the right side of the lower body support , and also there are flexible lines that run near the forward section of the tansaxle
