Default Not for sale!

Just an observation about the 928.
Having purchased the '78 Euro 5spd for $1,000, and having the original intent of re-selling it and making a few bucks, I can't sell it!
I sorted out the fuel tank and lines, ($70) the suspension, ($261) cleaned the electrics, (still chasing after a few things, naturally) new shoes, ($400) and she is in definite need of paint and forward seats. Maybe I just got lucky that most of her parts are new, but this car has become my daily driver and I love it! I still don't have $1,800 in the car.
I was offered $6,500 cash for the car today and after some serious thought, I turned it down. I had to think about it - for a split second! Where can you buy anything to replace it with? Something that is as much fun to drive, an individual art statement that still gets 20+ mpg, and isn't a "dime a dozen" car for less then $6,500?
If I could replace it with a S4 5spd for that cost - I "might" sell it.
To me it's the bird in the hand - and I already have the 3 birds in the bush

I still think these are the best car ever made. I ask you, what other car can the average person buy, that has performance, engineering, or style that will continue to last another 30 years?
It reminds me of buying the Shelby 35 years ago - I had the best deal I could ever get for a sports car - I've kicked myself ever since for selling it.
Even my wife agrees about the 928's - I'd be crazy to sell em.... I'm hanging in for the long run
I must admit - the wife's a keeper too

GREAT decision, Crazy Mike! I'm giddy about the thought of "driving the wheels off" the '84 as a daily driver and ENJOYING IT! Sounds like you will too!!

I think Mike's point is that the average OB out there is $10,000 away from being worth $6,500 and he has lucked into one with a load of new parts and he has only needed to spend another $1800 to get his to that value. So why sell it?

Well, he said "still chasing after a few things, naturally) ... and she is in definite need of paint and forward seats"

So, it sounds like it is $5k away still, as needs paint is a big $ item.

I agree almost old OBs are many dollars away from being a $6500 car.

Hey Mike, if they want a great looking 84 with auto for $5k send them my way

Default Value vs. Cost

I don't think it is fair to attach normally expected maintenance items on to the price of any car. I bought mine for $6500 5 1/2 years ago, and sank some more cash into it immediately. I have driven it 70,000 miles in that time and crossed this country 2 1/2 times and then some. It has been a great P car if not the greatest I've owned. And now it needs paint. Well, it is over 20 years old. What did I expect? I have a supercar. One of the greatest of the greats. Just because the ashtrays are full is not reason to sell it. But of course I will never get the money for paint back in cash, but in use. If you want to invest in gold bars and keep them in the bank that's one thing. But we use our cars and that requires an reasonable continuing expenditure. Totally all the receipts over the life of ownership is not a fair estimation of value. How many times does your 928 crack your face from ear to ear? And how many times has it saved your rear end from disaster? Priceless. And mine is still not burning or using any oil at 200,000 miles, while it lights up the rear tires all day long.
It is a bargain at more than what I have into it. If you want economy and sell your cars every three years and pay cash for them, then buy a Honda Civic. If you want to race the sun across the countryside, what is that worth to you? You can do it in a 928 and stil have money left for groceries and stuff in the end. I want another one as a back up. Considering the performance and safety it is a steal.

Mike,

Your Lh computer is a 503 series for a later car, chip is different although you had the correct 85-86 chip in it, thought I would let you know.
Mark

P.S. Still working on this surging thing !

Thanks! The computers were from someone who shall go nameless - as replacement for the 86.5

BTW - paint is a big ticket item?? I can paint the car for <$500 in paint - base and clear - and have one heck of a lot better looking car than most new. I actually look for cars that need paint - the cost is better as looks sell and people are sure their car needs thousands to paint - I love my booth!
That's not bad - I have extra seats, and the sorting is simple little things, like fixing the stbd headlight so when I "flash" the driving lights, it doesn't flash too....

And yep - with 4 one the property, I still go look with friends, I just leave my wallet at home....

Sell it? But then you start over on another. I believe there is huge value in knowing the history, esp if it is your history of replacing stuff.
