I ran with an 89 GT down and back from SITM 02 (and an assortment of S4's, S's, and an OB). The GT walked away when the road got straight. In the twisties, no troubles. That's the primary reason I drive these beasts. I don't want to dragrace. I want to squirt from 80 to 130 and back again thru the gnarliest road we've got. All day long. And then come back.
Finally, stuff a properly breathing Euro engine into an OB and there goes the HP to weight downside.

OK, I'm butting in here. I've got a '79 with an '83 bottom end. This car is fast. It's got to be way more than the stock 220hp.
My other recommendation is LSD. If you want to fly you need wings. An open differential doesn't cut it. You can corner on one rear wheel and stay in control with LSD.
