Post Reverse light switch.

Anyone know how difficult it is to fix/replace the reverse light on a 5 speed?

I've gone through the electrical, and it' s deffently the switch. When it put her into reverse, the switch doesn't close. When I jumper the switch, the the reverse lights come on.

I found two wires that seem to go to the tranny. One seems to go somewhere up top, and disaperes, I can't follow it any more, my hands are not that small. The other one goes into a plastic cap on the rear of the final drive.

Which is what? I'm guessing one's the speedometer, and the other is the reverse light.

I'm hopeing for an easy fix. Currently, I have a toggle switch under the drivers seat that I'm useing to jumper the switch when I need to back up. I'm going to try to wire in a relay, and have it light up two big lights I want to put where the bummperets are now. I always want more light when I'm backing up. That'll be one way to get it!

Thanks

VU,

On my 78 the switch was mounted on the drivers side in front of the axles. There were two wires with a black rubber boot on the switch. When you pull the old switch, don't lose the pin that activates it. It wasn't included with the new switch.

VU,

The switch is exactly where Dennis says. It's a piece of cake to pull it out. You will see some tranny fluid come out but just a few drops so don't freak out.

The switch has two parts to it. The electrical contact portion (the part that unscrews) and a little piece referred to as the "Cam Follower". The Cam Follower is the mechanical portion that closes the switch.
My reverse lights did not work when I bought the car. I pulled the switch and found that the PO had removed the switch and lost the cam follower. It is about $3.00 from the dealer.

Same as indicated above.

Follow the transmission linkage rod back to the transmission. The switch is mated to the selector assembly on the transmission.

Switch replacement is detailed in the WSM. If you don't have a copy, I recommend you get them on CD. A source is listed within a post in the New Visitor...FAQ topic posted at the top of this forum.
