Question Which Stereo

Original Stereo/tape deck has finally had the &%$#%. Looking to replace. My mechanic ahs told me to get a Blaupunkt and has recommended a guy that knows 928s . I have no real Brand loyalty for stereos but I can get a great deal on a JVC unit. I have read elsewhere that the stereo head unit sits at around 45 degrees angle in a 928 and that only Blaupunkts can handle the angle (rumour probably started by Blaupunkt marketing dept).

Should I chance it with the JVC or should I pass up the great JVC deal and go with the Blau.

Cheers,

Al Jones

My alpine works great. Added a new amplifier and replaced all 8 speakers.

Do a search for blau as there has been much discussion on this.

Also, here is a location that others have recommended.

I have been looking at the Blaupunkt RNS150
It has a build in GPS navigation system. I wonder if anyone has used it before.

Alan,

IMHO Blau is total junk. I've had quite a few in cars with Blaupunkt stereos and I've been horribly displeased with performance and quality. JVC is higher quality but does not offer the performance of the new Pioneer/Premier, Alpine, Sony, or Kenwood. Alpine and Kenwood just recently rejoined Sony and Pioneer in quality and performance.

I have a Premier in my supercharged 560 SEC, my E430 sport, and a Pioneer in my 928. I'm by no means an advocate for any brand and to each his own, but in my experience Pioneer/Premier has offered the highest quality and performance on the market for the last 10 plus years. However, Alpine has made great strides in the last few years and is now making a great product. I think Alpine was relying on marketing instead of quality and performance to sell their products for around 15 years but are now back in the hunt.

Thumbs up

Alan,
This was a topic a couple of months ago. My friend has a Blau Casablanca in his 928, and it is great. I have a Sony CDM 730 in my 928, and the sound is much better then my old pioneer. I bought mine at www.sbhcorp.com and they have great deals. They also have a toll free number and seem to know what they are talking about. Good luck

Four months and counting with my new JVC unit. It hasn't had any problems, so if the angle is an issue, its not going to rear its ugly head until the warrenty expires

I've had nothing but good experienced with Blaupunkt. But my personal favorite is Denon. I've had the same unit since 1995 with no problems. I've had Alpine and Pioneer models and felt that they were a cheaper quality- could have been those specific models though.

Cool

I have a Blau Tokyo installed at the moment and love it. I had the Blau Miami (looks alot like the original) but wanted the bells and whistles. I also have a JVC unit in one of my other cars and (IMHO) it doesn't compare to Blau for sound quality. It's not too bad, don't get me wrong, but I was using Blau before I bought a Porsche.

Hello, For my 3 cents worth (inflation) I recently looked and looked around for a good stereo system, the ones that seemed to be recommended over and over are Panasonic or Alpine, recommended for quality, sound, dependability and least future problems. Blau's reputation seems to live on fumes from the past ages, I checked on them too and no one recommened them, even actually dealers who sold them said pass. I went with a Panasonic "the Ghost" which has a different concept than the usual systems (a total touch screen system that blanks to black when not in use; a no buttons or ***** system) and I'm very happy with it.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I am going to get the JVC Unit. Doesn't look as original, but with MP3 I can burn a single CD with 4 albums worth of songs and avoid the hassle of fitting a stacker. I won't even touch the issue of where to get the MP3s from, let's just say that the music is probably cheaper with MP3.

The issue now is who to fit it. My mechanic put me onto a guy he says does work for the local Porsche centre. I have called the guy and he seems to know 928s pretty well. He is expensive, but probably cheaper than getting a bothched job fixed up later. The other option is to get the unit fitted at a reputable car audio shop.

I have found a reputable shop that says they have worked on 928s before. They (and several others that I called) say that fitting a new Head Unit to an existing Amp is a nightmare. They say that the increased power from new head units mean that I should bypass the amp and go straight from the Head Unit to the speakers(crossovers).

The aforementioned Porsche guy reckons this is silly as the speakers are matched to the Amp and that he will make a special cable to fix this problem up and still use the original amp.

Friends of mine that have worked professionally in electronics and car audio agree with the shop, not the Porsche 'expert'. What does the forum think, is the original amp from an 89S4 worth keeping or should i bypass/replace.

Cheers,

Al jones

Alan, I went the Alpine route with XM radio, GPS nav. and 12 disk changer the fact is that I never use the disk changer, XM covers all my needs in the music dept. but I just remembered XM only covers the U.S. Do you have any sat. radio systems down under?
