Post coolant gauge reads hot while driving

Took my car for a ride toady, 68 degrees, and my gauge was reading toward the top white line while crusing. Usually it's at the halfway mark or a little lower. My speed was 65 mph to seventy five mph on a highway. What caused it to get hot? I pulled over in a gas station and checked the fan clutch it had a little resistance, and the coolant is full. Thanks, Reno

Reno...The first thing that comes to my mind is the thermostat. It might be defective, not opening all the way. Another thing to check is the airflow through the rad. If there are restrictions (leaves and other crap) built up between your condenser and rad that won't help in the cooling of the engine...Good-luck

Bill, Thanks for replying. I had the thermostat replaced with the one that opens sooner than stock. I changed the coolant to the correct non-phosphate brand. I'm leaning toward changing the radiator. It's the only thing left. Reno

It probably isn't overheating. The third line is normal on most cars. The temp gauge is not a lab instrument.

You might want to do an archive search or two on the subject - that particular dead horse is pretty well beaten by now ...

Why did Porsche even bother putting in the first two lines on the gauge?, it should be the third white line and the red zone. My friends BMW stays dead center, the way I feel it should be. Anyway, thanks for the post. Reno

My gauge almost never goes past the first 1/3 of the reading

Try jiggling the temp connector on the engine. That did it for me. Dirty connection, most likely.
