Cool 928 tire size

I recently sold a set of chrome flats, 16x8 rears, with Dunlop Sport SP 8000 255x45x16's. They fit fine on my 1982, with no modifications, or spacers. I just received an e-mail from him, claiming that the rear tires rubbed the inside of his fenders. I believe that his is an 1985 928. I checked with my mechanic, and he says that there is no difference. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions???? I suggested that he bring it up here at the rennlist board for suggestions or ideas .

His stock tires are 225 50 16s and he's added considerable width. If his ride height is not correct or if his suspension bushings are weak he may have a problem.

I agree w/Ernest. Tell him to adjust/check his ride height and suspension in general. If not, maybe suggest spacers (if applicable).

Better still, have him change the 255s to 245s which will likely eliminate the rubbing, and will actually fit the 8" wide rim correctly providing more safety and better handling. YMMV.

I am betting that he has the big spacers on his car, and doesn't realize that he needs to remove them to use the wider tire/wheel..

When I got the S4 wheels for mine, I had to do that to avoid rubbing of the 255's.

Cool

Mark is right. I spoke with Jim Bailey, from 928 Intl, and he told me those cars have factory spacers in the rear, and can be removed with a screwdriver. The bolts are a little bit longer, and should be cut to accomodate the difference in length. Hope Rick from KC reads this thread... <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Actually -

Some of the wider ones are bolted on with steel lug nuts, and have their own lug bolts.

Hey Larry -

Did you get your buyer settled down with the explanations on this thread?

Back when I had a 1986.5 928S, I bought 8"x16" rims and mounted 245/45-16 tires on them. When it came time to mount them on the car, I had to roll the rear fenders about 1/4" to get the setup to fit without rubbing and while using the OEM 21mm rear spacers. YMMV.

Ed - yea...you could probably roll the fenders with the 245's, but the one's that Larry is talking about has 255's...that'd be some significant 'bending' to get them in with the 21mm spacers.

Mark:
That's one reason I said (in an earlier post) to tell the new owner he should change the rear tires to 245s. However, the other reasons (safety and handling) are far more important than rolling the fender or going to a smaller spacer (and then cutting off the excess studs - ooch!). YMMV.
