I'd vote for 'smoke' and go back to the guys who did the stereo install immediately.
More than plenty of the electrical problems with these cars can be traced to amateur and less-than-knowledgeable "professional" stereo and alarm installers. The electrics in the car are the result of some over-enthusiastic engineers at the factory, who had the luxury of unlimited budgets and the like. The result is a very sophisticated (for its day) system that requires some knowledge beyond what the guy at Circuit City normally has. Techs will just stab at wiring until they find a big enough wire that has 12 volts on it, without regard for the stuff at the other end. The common result is a fire (starts out with the smoke you saw...) at worst, and almost always has some melted insulation in a place where you can't get to it to fix. So find the master tech at wherever you had the work done and explain the problem. Explain also that the soultion to any melted wires or insulation is replacement of the damaged harness with a factory replacement and does not include options like jumpers and crimp connectors ever. You are driving a $60k collector car, and the value plummets when you have less-than-perfect electricals in it.
My two sense from an EE perspective ...

My bad...didn't fully read the part about the fuse pulling that stopped the smoke. Again, my apolgies.
Hmmmm....A/C, rear wiper, and the sunroff no longer work. Which fuse did you pull that stopped the smoke event?

think i figured it out po had put a 8 fuse in a 25 fuse slot(#17) so when heater was turned on fuse burnt up. found 1/2 a crispy fuse in vacinity. rechecked all fuses , hopefully no more smoke.

Congratulations on your '86 - I enjoyed mine greatly.
Hopefully, you have your smoke problem nailed, so I won't get into that.
The **** that you asked about sounds like the rear hold-down for the stereo amp cover. There should be another matching **** just infront of the passenger seat. Removing them will allow you to remove the carpeted cover - there is usually a Blaupunkt amp under there, unless the stereo installer removed it - if so, go get it back!
