Unhappy OXS light

Hi all,

I just inherited an 82 928 and have driven it a handful of times. The engine looks and feels good but yesterday the OXS! light began to flicker and along with choppy idling (while idle) my CD player cuts off and on while this flickering occurs. Does anyone know what the OXS! means and could the 2 incidents be related?

Hi Allan,
I believe on the 82 the OXS lamp indicates a O2 sensor failure.
This may also explain your idle problems.
The O2 sensor is relatively easy to replace and you can purchase them from the BIG3 vendors either in the OEM or aftermarket versions.

I don't see how it relates to the stereo though?
You should probably investigate where the stereo has been tapped into for power?
You would be surprised at some of the extremely BAD locations people have picked up 12V from.

Allan,

First of all, WELCOME!

I have an 82 and while Bernie may correct, if I recall when I've stalled my car, the OXS light comes on. But my stereo keeps playing. If the car is running rough enough to send a vibration to the stereo power connection that could be the culprit. You'd know from driving over rough roads if this is the case or not.

I think a more likely problem is that the electrical connections at the battery or grounds (6 in all on the 82) are bad. So bad that the radio isn't getting the juice it needs so it shuts down, the car is just getting enough to keep running.

One other possibility is is the idle mixture. But that's just a WAG (wild *** guess). Perhaps some of the Old Bastard Gurus can chime in?

Allan,

If the 82 is like my 83, then the OXS light is not a failure indication, it's just a counter that comes on approx. at 60,000 mile intervals. The "counter" is located under the amplifier cover next to the passenger seat. Remove the cover and look for the reset button marked OXS. Pressing the button should reset the counter and the light should go out. My OXS light is on permenantly, pushing the button does nothing for me. If I remove the electrical connector going to the counter unit, thelight will go out but I'[m not sure if anything else runs through that circuit so I left it connected.

The OXS light has no effect on anything - as KBlair said, it is just a counter.

You need to check for loose/bad electrical connections. Reseat every plug, fuse and relay in the central power panel. Check all the grounds. Clean all of the battery connections. Etc., Etc., Etc.

I just bought my car, so maybe this information isn't helpful or correct.

The small wire on the alternator (exciter circuit?) was shorting on the body of the alternator. When this happened, the OXS light would come on and the voltage would drop. I wrapped the exposed section of the wire and the problem disappeared. According to the wiring diagram, the small alternator wire and the OXS counter are related. This would also explain why your radio might be cutting out (lack of voltage). Hope this helps.

Allen,

Check the wires at your alternator, just fixed the same problem, the wires going to the alternator were corroded and neaded to be cleaned.( Twenty year old wires ) I put new ends on and the problem was gone. Hope that helps
