Default Inaccurate odometer (565,000 miles!)

I have an '82 928 with an odometer issue. The odometer reads 565639 miles which is grossly overstated as the condition of the car does not reflect this mileage in any way. As well, at present the odometer is not working. A 2000 Illinois Inspection report shows 55,000 miles. I have read several threads which refer to situations where the 100,000 odometer wheel "sticks" and turns over prematurely, resulting in highly exagerated mileages. Is this a common occurence? I would be interested to know how many have experienced this. I'd like to get this sorted out as I will be registering the car this year in Canada (for the first time) but if I am ever in an accident, 565,000 miles could potentially result in the car being "written off" vs. repaired (and they would pay me a pittance!). Proof that this is a common occurence might give me some credible backup that the odometer has malfunctioned. Thanks in advance for your help, Ernie.

Hi Ernie,

It's not unknown, it's been posted here several times.

But proof in a legal sense is a bit harder - anything babbled about on teh intraweb is merely hearsay.

What you need is:

A) video of that digit flipping while a 928 drives, or

B) a qualified mechanic declaring the odometer broken and the car "True Kilometerage Unknown".

Good luck!

The vast majority of earlier odometers up 88 are very suspect as to actual mileage.
Most have had repairs of some type and can be very very easily reset to read whatever mileage the owner wants to see.
I NEVER beleive what is on the speedo and look elswhere to qualify milage on the older cars.

Even the digital dashes can be changed.

So if you see a car with 50k original mileage and the seats are worn out - do not beleive it.

Take the speedo out and send it to a speedometer repair shop and have them rebuild calibrate and set the mileage to what ever number you like. Or find a used speedometer and put it in.

X2! My dad recently purchased an 85 from its second owner. The guy had owned the car from 20k to 105k miles. He said that during that time he had to have the odometer repaired four times!
