Default Steve Clausman, the 928, and the U.S. Express

Alex Roy, author of The Driver, is underwriting a movie called 32 hours 7 minutes, detailing post-cannonball record-breaking coast-to-coast endurance runs. Steve Clausman won in 1981 with a Porsche 928.

Apparently, Mr. Clausman has passed on to the big 928 showroom in the sky. I did a search on Clausman on Rennlist and found no previous posts. Thought others would like to know.

Wow - how did this one fly under the radar (so to speak) for all these years? I've never heard anything about this 928 event! I have heard of the book upon which the movie is based...hmm

I have read "The Driver" but there is no mention of the 928 being used in the previous attempts. This is interesting.

Cool Flew Under the Radar

I'm not sure how it flew under the radar-- except to say the US Express, as described in various contexts, was the underground anti-Cannonball response to the publicity and law enforcement, ergo, it was a secret.

Yates has an index of official Cannonball participants in Cannonaball! including:

Rod Dornsife 42:27:00 Porsche 928 1979
John Lane 37:31:00 Porsche 928 1979
Jacques Villeneuve 37:31:00 Porsche 928 1979

But again these are only official Cannonball participants. The competition to which Roy refers was something called the US Express which I had never heard of until this year. I guess we'll have to see the movie-- en masse at some drive in somewhere with our 928s!
