Thumbs up New 928 Purchase - Help please

I am in the market for a late model 928. I have and have had a few earlt and late model Porsches. So I am not foreign to sports car up keep. I plan on using this 928 as my prior mode of transportation to and from work. Although I have a few other cars for back up. I am lucky enough to be close to "Greg Brown" of Precision Motorwerks in Anaheim. So my car will be well cared for. I plan on Greg doing the bulk of the service except oil changes. Here is where my problem lies! I am the type of person who cannot stand to not have everything perfect. My friends at the local PCA meetings say these 928's are the most expensive Porsches to maintain! Is this true? How much more expensive than a early 911? Please help. Also I am looking at low milage 1988 - 1991 S4 or GT's (20 to 30K range).

Ed's auto '91 is also still for sale yes?? its about a nice a 928 as you could hope to find & similarly priced. With you using Greg B for your repair work, your shark will be in the best of hands of course. Perhaps he can help you locate a 928, or at least have him check it out if its one in your area.

Ask him if the guy ever sold the Grey Linen/Linen '90 GT that was for sale last year in the mid $20s?? That was an incredible shark. Both he & Mark Anderson said that was a shark that impressed them, which must say alot for the car!! I was very interested, but convincing the wife to go with the 5spd & the owner rasing his price based upon the glowing reviews from the experts ended any hopes I had of getting it.

"My friends at the local PCA meetings say these 928's are the most expensive Porsches to maintain!"... thinkin they do not own a 928, nor ever have..... ask them what the expense would be if they let a 20 yr old 911 be neglected??? Even just the general maintenance.... No different. A well maintained 928 is probably not any different than any other Porsche in my opinion. But, I hope the rest of the Porsche and car world keeps those opinions, cause thats what makes them affordable to me!!!

You are very lucky....there are a few excellent condition 1991 S4 or GT's for sale right now......even more lucky that Greg will work on your shark....so you know its done right!

Both of the 928's mentioned are very nice......not far from concours winning condition.....I'm just like you in that my 928 has to be perfect.....so I feel your pain!

Also take a look at Afshins 87 5 speed.....its also very nice

Start with a good one and the maintenance is not as much as the myth carries.

This is really critical. Much more critical than mileage. And I think given the way you describe yourself you should take a long test drive and make sure the car is exactly to your liking, because 928s have personalitys, and the way it drives when you buy it is very likely to be the way it runs for the rest of eternity.

Trying to ''fix'' that could easily cost you tens of thousands, with very little result to show for it. OTOH, a really nice car will reward you from the moment you purchase it, and require little more than routine maintenance. This may be more complicated than the service on a 911 say, but it is pretty much on par with a 951.

BTW, the things I am talking about are how the engine responds, tranny shifting, driveline vibration, and overall feel and smoothness of the car. Ac and electricals should be flawless. I say it a lot, but neglected 928s are often as nice looking as the super ones, and often sell for more money. I have to say though, if Greg is your go to guy, I don't see how you can go wrong. Just dont take the car to your average 911 mechanic and expect to be happy.

Greg is a VERY LUCKY MAN.
I purchased mine from a P.O. who had begun the necessary refresh/update work and I took hand-off of the wrench when I bought it. No...in this situation repairs (of which I have done a considerable amount) have not been that expensive. The cost of getting set up to maintain a 928 far outweighed the cost of parts. In your situation, you'll need a war chest if there is the possibility of needing injector maintenance, vacuum actuated device or breather hose/sensor replacements. That's just the surface layer under the hood, not including what's underneath. My advise is:
1) Check the listing for owners selling top of class examples, such as Ed Hughes is selling his Concours winner. Be prepared to consider cars in other parts of the country.
2) have Greg look your prospective car over in a cursory fashion to pre-qualify if its mechanically in the ball park
3) have Greg thoroughly check the top candidate out for you, on a stem to stern Pre-Purchase inspection. This will cost bucks, but save you in the long run.

Good luck and hope to see you in the owner's circle.

Mike

mj1pate: Thanks, that was very helpful! This is exactly the kind of info I am looking for. Any other comments would be much appreciated.
