Post Powder Coating Calipers? Socal.

Getting bigger wheels with more space to see the calipers through. Uhoh. Upgrade chain just moved up a link.

Any ideas? Sandblast/media blast and then get coated, then put all the seals, pistons, etc back in?

Will I ever drive my car again?

Hi Brendan,

I have all of my powdercoating done at Applied Powder in Oxnard, CA.

Here is the link to their website
<a href="http://www.appliedpowder.com/" target="_blank">http://www.appliedpowder.com/</a>

Ask for Vic.
Really great guy and loves Porsche's

Good Luck

I had a caliper from my motorcycle done with the stuff and it is very tough. It is also extremely resistent to fluids like the aformentioned brake fluid.

another suggestion is nickel plating for something a little different. Caliper would have to be torn down first. It could then be polished and the nickel plate will look like chrome. great chemical resistance.

Something else to be aware of if you are going to track the car. I had my front calipers done in red after I put the big red upgrades on the back. On some of the track days (using the Pagid Orange brake pads), the front calipers heat exceeded the melting point of the powder coating/clear coat. I have brake dust melted into the powder coat. No amount of brake cleaner/elbow grease was able to get it off. I ended up buffing out the worst of it. That didn't do wonders for the finish. I was pushing the brakes pretty hard, so this may not be an issue with other cars. Even with the 55 Bar rear bias valve, the rear calipers seemed to be OK and never approached the temperature of the front brakes (using an infrared pyrometer). After one season I'm thinking they need to be stripped again and done with high temp paint and high temp clear coat. Any other suggestions besides the nickel coating (which sounds interesting)?

Thanks,

Brendan O K the engine is opened up to see the cams , you next want to check the bearings . Now your looking at the brakes ? suspension can not be far behind ; You bought new wheels for a car that does not run ? I would really like to see how the aftermarket injection performs on an S-4 I am just getting concerned about far in the future that might be ? or is it the process ....not the end result which you enjoy ?

Cool

I guess I'm a cheap bastard.

That's why I do some of the things I've done to my car...such as paint the silly FED lights to match the paint instead of having them shaved and the car repainted.

[a decent re-spray is in the works]

-I'll just advance what I did: Go over to Wal-Mart and pick up some cheap Krylon spraypaint in "aluminum" color, and after a thorough cleaning and masking...paint them up.

Four years later, mine still look good- I just wash them with a rag each time I wash the car.

Total cost: $1.99~

[As we hear the sound of a jagged knife being thrust into rib and then turned, scrapping against the bones]

No Jim, I don't like not driving my car. On the ride home today from an appointment about 30 miles south (driving beat up lumina), I decided that I will probably leave the brake calipers alone, as I will be going 993TT up front not too far down the future. My concern, vainly, was the fact that you will not see the calipers more through thr bigger wheels.

Yes, I bought wheels for a car that has not run since October 2002.

The DTA install is not yet even started. I have to get the engine out for the reseal (somehow this became a WYAIT for the DTA install). I have to have the guy make the loom, and then I have to tune it all.

Before that I have to get the damn 81 out of the garage so I have more room for the 89 to be put diagonally.

I am a batcher. I put things in categories, and wait until the categories are lines to to do all the work at once.

The suspension is already planned, and I will be using the new bilsteins and springs from the 81. Maybe some drop links.

You don't think I day dream while driving the lumina that I am actually driving my darth vader 928? If I had the money I would make somebody else do this, and enjoy the "parts decisions" and "upgrade fever" while still driving the car 90% of the time.

Plus I only pulled the valve covers to get them coated.

Normy - I'm guessing 'FED' means the federally mandated red & amber lights, and you painted them, like I recently did also?

I think it is Wally who is quick to quip: "There are no new ideas, just new people".

Yeah Porken- those are the ones. I just call them FED lights because the Federal types forced them onto the car.

At least yours look cool; Mine look like they came off of an Airstream travel trailer~ <img border="0" alt="[oops]" title="" src="graemlins/oops.gif" />

Now that's interesting - I always was under the impression that US cars had the side markers in front of the wheel, while federalized-ROW cars had them in front of and (added to) the rear of the wheel.

Ken, your car is not a euro is it?

Sorry Brendan for the post hijack.

I'll start a new thread where Randy can show his car (again ), on topic... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Normy - I forgot your car is a Euro.

Randy - My '81 is US, I sanded and painted the US side markers.

{<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=14;t=007380" target="_blank">New Post - Painted Side Markers</a>}

Normy - move that pic over to the above link?

Yeah, sorry for diverting Brendan's topic - it seemed he had reached a resolution on what to do with his calipers, before this spun off.

I've removed my pic Ken - it was intended only as a reference of another white car with intact corner markers...
