Allegedly the older models (sorry, don't know the cutoff date) have the mounting hole but not the C pillar strengthening if they didn't have 3 point belts from the factory. I'm not certain of this, but received that info when I considered doing this to my '89 (which does have the strengthening).

YMMV for a US car of course.

In my case the mounting holes for the "roller-uppers" did not match, so one has to fab some sort of adapter or bracket. That was with my '81 euro and S4 belts.

I have a set that I will give away for free. One lacks the spring though and will not rewind.

I believe The S4s had it factory starting in '87, except in the US, where they started in '88.

I suspect this might work as well:

Although I'm not sure how universal receptacles are, or if the spacing would work, or what length. But you could get custom colors, and since the factory 3 points seem hard to find, might be worth a look.

I purchased some non-retractable lap belts from this place that I'm going to fit for putting a rear childs seat in.

If you're looking for 3 point belts:

Andre - did you ever do this? How did it go? I am thinking about doing this to my 81.

Thanks!

Andre,

Tried this on my 79. I had the same thing, needed some shoulder belts for the kids.

As was stated, 88 was first year for shoulder harness on US models. Now for reality. The C pillar holes are there all the way back to 79 for sure. They were there on my car. The problem comes from the retractors that are located outboard down by the wheel wells. On the OB's (at least my 79) the retractors are very small and bolt into small recessed areas there. The later model retractors (not sure when the cutoff was-but it was before the shoulder harness became avail) are much larger and the cutouts in the body are much larger for the retractors.

So, you could upgrade say an 87 with no shoulder harnesses to an 88 and up shoulder harness for sure. NOT A PROBLEM, VERY EASY! I'm not sure exactly when they went to the larger retractors. It could be 80 or it could be 84, I'm not sure. You would need to pull the retractors out and compare the size. If they match, bingo! Unbolt old, bolt in new. Feel for provision in c-pillar, exacto knife, bolt in shoulder harness, cover with the decorative cover (black plug) and you are done.

Give us an update as you complete.

Australian cars always had automatic 3-point rear belts. One of the Aus landshark members is restoring a '78 5-speed that has them.

Part number for the belt/retractor is 927 803 021 02

If you look in the PDF version of PET for '82 from Porsche you'll find them listed along with all the washers, spacers and screws needed to fit.

Info on the car is:

> Hi all, just found out about my new 928 .
> Aussie delivered,
> Made 01-06-78, complianced 08-08-78
> Colour B2, B2 (Porsche code) Continental Orange, Now Red
> Options 197, Stronger Battery
> 261, Passenger Mirror, Elect heated and Adjustable,
> 461, ??
> 573, A/C

You can see the belts in these photos:

I installed 3-points into my 87 years ago, and it has a rear leather saddle from an 83. I have a spare set of 88 or 89 belts somewhere, I'm sure. I'll ebay them if there's interest.

For the 87 with 83 rear saddle, I used the 88 parts and had to also use shorter receivers else they would have poked out of the holes. I forget exactly what I used ... could have been early car; could have been 944; could have beeb front ones. Not sure anymore.

REMEMBER that early belts and later receivers do not work together.

The size and fitting of the retractor units were the same from '84 onwards - its the pre-84 cars that use the smaller ones I listed above.

I used 3-point belts/retractors and receivers all from an '86 in my '89 S4 (my car is ex-UK where they didn't get 3-point belts until '90 - so I had to do it for Australian registration).

The receivers from the '86 fitted perfectly into my rear saddle - flush with the holes, so I'm guessing the receiver length changes with the belts and saddles going from 83 to 84 based on Heinrich's post?

There are several part numbers for the rear belts from '84 onwards (changes in 88, 89 etc) - I don't know what the differences are and haven't played with any local GTS belts to see if they have better ratchets, springs etc. in the retractors, but they all share the same mounting hardware and fit the same hole in the side of the passenger seat.
