Post Fuel delivery problems... filter, relay???

The good news is that i've made some progress getting my '86 928S to start. I believe that no fuel is getting to engine. Why? I was getting it ready to be towed, when i thought I'd try one more time. The engine hit!... but briefly. I was both encouraged and discouraged ( for now i knew that i was destined to mess with it some more before going to the shop) I took off air filter housing and squirted some starter spray into the intake housing. It hit again!!several times when i squirted more joy juice... but would not keep running. I took off the right rear wheel well trim piece because that's where i thought i remembered the fuel filter being. I see a small check valve and a brass looking inline coupling about 9/16" diameter . The check valve appears to work. where is the fuel filter? the car has been sitting alot with 106,000 miles. i've owned it since 46K and do not remember changing the filter.the fuse checks good, should i check the relay? i like to solve my problem w/o a tow!!!thanks in advance for any help.

Back to basics ...

1) Kneel at the rear bumper and listen while someone operates the starter. There should be a buzz from the fuel pump while the starter is operating. The pump runs ONLY when the engine is running, OR the starter is operating.

2) If there is no buzz, replace fuse #42.

3) If there is still no buzz, put the HVAC blower control on low speed, then check the defrost and make sure that the fan goes to high speed. If so, swap Relay VIII (Defrost) and Relay XX (Fuel Pump).

4)If there is still no buzz, go to our web site and find the photos showing the fuel pump and filter, then check for 12 vdc at the pump with the starter operating. If there is 12 vdc at the pump, but the pump doesn't buzz, the pump may be bad.

If there is no voltage at the pump, the problem sould be the alarm system.

It is extremly unlikely that the fuel filter is the problem.

Hi Wally, and thanks for the advice. You may not remember, but you have helped me before...I will try your suggestions as soon as i can get a helper. BTW, your mention of the alarm intrigues me as i have been considering it as the culprit. My battery was continually discharging 'cause i haven't been driving the car much. I put the charger on it forgetting to disconnect the battery first and have been suspicious that i have somehow engaged the alarm: i've tried unlocking/locking with different keys on so forth. Think it could be my alarm shutting off the fuel supply? it will "start" using starter fluid, but for a few seconds..

I'll help you on this one Wally.

The car is firing because you have spark.

What you don't have apparently is fuel delivery and/or injector pulse. The fuel thats getting into the system is probably just residual fuel dribbling in from the rails along with your quickstart. I would have also guessed a cold-start injector but I don't believe any 85/86 MY 32V engines have one.
BTW - Stop using the quick start!!
I have heard that it will damage your pistons if you over use that stuff.

Follow Wally's suggestions to verify that the fuel pump does or does not work. If it does work then you may have an injector pulse problem. It probably wouldn't hurt to be certain you have good spark. Get yourself a timing light to check this.

I could give you all the details to diagnose this on the 84 car but I haven't had that problem on my 85.

Check back with us after you have confirmed fuel pump operation.

BTW - All 928's will run down their batteries when left standing for extended periods. There are still things being powered in the car even with the ignition turned off.
