Post Anyone speak German?

Over the weekend I decieded to install some new rear speakers. Upon removal of the interior rear panel, I found a hand writen note taped to the inside of the panel. This is what it said.

Achtung
Ruckseite verstayke
H.kehler bescheid geben
bei Einban Montage
Fur Wagen Nv3
Produktions NV Onng

Can anyone tell me what it says? It was a lot like finding burried treasure. <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />

Attention,

Jerk or "Take" side (I don't know "verstayke")H kehler answer For car Nv3 give to NV Onng production with Einban assembly.

A little bit of german, and a little bit of babelfish. I think you need to decifer a few letters a bit better. Maybe scan it?

Very interesting.

Send it to me, too, at nicole@mossinger.com. I not only speak German, I even speak the local dialect of the Porsche workers. Well, not the mix of Turkish and German, but the dialect of the area around the factory... ;-)

According to my Father-in-law who speaks the most German in my family (He's Belgian), the message states:

"This panel has been reinforced/strengthened and Herr Kohler was advised when the interior was installed.

For Car #3, S/N 0119".

My guess is that the panel was damaged during production and repaired prior to install.

HTH,
Scott

This actually is an interesting production artifact you have stumbled upon as it is a nice proof of the fact that your shark is a mostly handcrafted high-end sportscar.
I'd translate the note as follows -

"Attention!
Back side has been reinforced.
Notify Mr.Koehler of assembly.
For car number 003,
production number 0119."

It would be disappointing if this really was a production artifact.

Nachtmeister beat me to it... Hey, I think it's cool that our cars have these little quirks - it just shows that they were made with love instead of machines...

Additional reasons why this can't be a factory production artifact:

It's not a dated form with header, control number, and signature/initials. Configuration control and change management is the heart of Design & Manufacturing, not to mention it's a major regulatory liability vis-a-vis universal quality standards, such as iso 9001/2, Six Sigma, and others, perhaps even more stringent, even back in 1982. We like to believe Porsche never faultered on its compliance...at least never meant to.

Doesn't mean it's not interesting though. Could it be the shop/tuner who installed the aftermarket parts? car audio shop who installed the current speakers?...considering the car has been modified since factory.

...but I could be wrong

In the old days, things were done a lot more casually, and Porsche is known to customize things in all kinds of ways. This note does not surprise me the least, and I have no doubt it is original.

Here are the German words spelled correctly:

Achtung
Rückseite verstärkt
H. Köhler Bescheid geben
bei Einbau Montage
für Wagen Nr 3
Produktionsnr 0119

I'm pretty sure the vehicle in question is VIN 0119. THat would indicate it's a very early car in the model year. They might have tried to work out some issues around that time, and the note might be part of that proces.

Nicole,

For clarification purposes, the Quality Control standards I'm referring to, date back to late 70's and early 80's.

And to satisfy my curiosity, would you by any chance know which particular issue(s) Porsche was trying to work out in the rear panel, 6 years into the production of the 928? what changes were introduced in the later models for that area and why?

Also curious why things are done casually in 1982? was the car priced too cheap for anyone to care about cost of the struggling Porsche flagship?

I'm not saying I have the specific answer. All I'm saying is that in an environment where no more than 30 928s were built on one day, a lot was done by hand, and where changes or improvements were made as soon as they became available, a note like this is not out of the range of possibilities.
