Indeed you are correct. I just looked it up on PET and it shows 2 o-ring seals.
The car I did the test fit on did not have the o-ring around the MAF. Without having it in my hands, I still think you could get rid of that o-ring and get a better fit becasue the MAF will sit further into the cast housing.

The O-ring in the U is thick and does most of the sealing, but it recessed. The little one on the MAF is smaller diameter ans probably does less sealing. I think it is more there to isolate the metal housing from each other. Either that or to seal the slange of the MAF to the larger O-ring.
When reassembling mine, I accidentally left the little one out. Scott made me go find it because he said it was important.

Like I said before this setup is the same as the L-Jet cars and my o-ring seals good enough to hold back 17psi.

I agree, and if it did become a problem, I would put a bracket to the inlet elbow to the maf to lock it down rather then trying to put a bracket on the maf.

Normally you have the air box bolted down to keep everything tight. When installing this setup, what performs the same function? BTW, for the uninitiated, I have highlighted the o-ring in question.

I'm with Matt on this one. I'm sure the smaller O-ring is just to cushion the bottom ring of the MAF where it contacts the inlet elbow. In a stock configuration with only the two airbox nuts holding everything in place, it just makes sure nothing rattles I would think. If you're going to clamp it down, I would still want something in there.

The steel clamps/claws that I have (posted on the page before this one) grabs the J boot at the location of the arrow in this picture, the other side also does the same thing but I don't think the casting lip is as big.

That's a cool setup you came up with. Might help with the same issue I'm having with the 81.

I'm ready to place my order
Spoke to Tim at 11:00 last night he said to put a Little Vaseline on the inside O-ring to swell it a little. I guess a little Vaseline between friends would be OK Worst case is that it won't seal and redo it again, seems others are doing it with good results but not on an 86.
By the way the 5 Rib alternator pulley can stay, just place it on the outside of the pulley not the inside as I have done.
It's amazing to me how one little piece of rubber can cause so much excitement on this group.

Would yea just put the damn thing on the way it was sent before you start screwing with it!!
You are like me on x-mas morning as a child. Before I had any idea what the new toy was supposed to do, I took it apart.
Ah hell, who am I kidding, I still do that.

If you took this intake off as many times as I have you would want to do it right the first time. I guess I'm experiencing delayed gratification the hard way. The kit is almost in just messing with the little stuff to drive myself crazy, but thats not hard to do. By the way it's 75 Degrees today so there !
