Post Modified cluster lighting

On my 86 944 the cluster is lighted from behind the guages (projected lighting.)

On every other modern day Porsche I thought the VDO cluster was lit from the rear. My recently purchased 84 928 is lit from the front.

I have not looked into the issue, but the light is projected from below just inside the plastic cover.

I assume it is a PO modification of sorts due to the reflective coating being worn.

...am I wrong in my assumption?

THanks,

Pappy

Nope, that's the way they are on the early-mid 928s.

Some folks have added after-market 'Indiglo' gauge faces to update the look and lighting of the instrument cluster, with mixed results.

The lighting for the pod guages is from the lower front. Three bulbs are reflected toward the guage faces. The bulbs are actually right below the guages, pointing toward the driver. It can become dim due to the reflecting pieces getting dirty.

It can also dim when the dimmer switch gets mucked up over the years. A few minutes cleaning helped mine quite a bit. YMMV.

Brittany,

I installed the speedhut indiglo gauges and actually liked the look and the lighting.
BUT---The way they fit was the worst, The center cutout was wrong on the Temp.,Fuel,Oil and Volt gauges. It was far enough off that they could not be installed wihtout being cut. Unfortunately, I cannot attest to speedhut's service because I did not contact speedhut in reference to this problem. (I know I should have but frustration had set in at the time.)

Although, I have heard others mention that they installed speedhut gauges and don't remember hearing anyone else having this problem.

Thanks for the replies.

My guages light up pretty well (in comparison to my 86' 944).

Will have to check the dimmer out tonight.

Thanks,

Pappy

Cool

I did the reverse indiglo, which came out pretty good in the end after much screwing around!

-One problem with the use of Indiglo on the 928: How do you light the needles. I solved this by painting them white and putting the original bulbs back in their holders.

The day picture came out good; The night pic did not. It really looks great at night, but I have to say that the Speedhut kit leaves a bit to be desired- the cutouts are not good, and you can see blue light from the indiglo backing coming through around the edges. Oh well.....

Normy,

I think those look great! I can't wait to install mine. Where did you tap for power?

Brittany- the blue edges are there, and almost look stock...until you realize that they aren't supposed to show. I guess I could have taken some black model paint and tried to cover them up, but I just wasn't in the mood after all the screwing around I did to get this right.

Jim- I ran the power wire into one of the sockets for the original bulbs. This way, the EL panels are sure to work with the headlight switch. I bet there is a better way to do this...but it was simple and hasn't caused me any trouble.
