Does anyone have any experience with those built in Escort detectors you can get? I have always wondered about those, but never met someone that spent the money on one before.

Interesting weve got the same ideas. The Donnelly is great isn't it - just works! Did you wire up the reverse inhibit ? Donnelly has some info on it but they sure don't make it easy to find..

Hi, Alan...

Yeah, I wired up the reverse inhibit. Had a little trouble getting the info I needed, too. Here's a somewhat amusing e-mail exchange from June, 2000:

(a) and that is my final answer!
The reason I have left this out is that discussing reverse inhibit at all would lead to confusion with 99% of the consumers.

Sincerely

Subject: Need Info on "Reverse Inhibit" on ECT Mirror

I'm going to be installing my recently-purchased ECT mirror this weekend on my '90 Porsche 928S4 and wanted to include the "reverse inhibit" feature.

Neither the installation guide that came with the ECT nor your website (at least anywhere I could find) describe what this signal is supposed to be. Is it:

(a) 12 VDC when in reverse, 0 VDC/ground (or maybe floating) when not in reverse?
(b) 0 VDC/ground when in reverse, floating when not in reverse?
(c) something else? (please describe)

I'd guess (a) and that this can just be connected to the back-up lights, but want to confirm this.

You might want to update your installation manual and website content to be clear about this. It would also be nice if your harness included a wire for this, as it seems like a good feature.

Mirror looks nice; I'm looking forward to having it working.

How did you mount the Donnelly to the glass? I had a real struggle trying to get the factory tab off the glass - in the end I gave up - twisted the tabs right off the base & used a power file to clean it up nice & flat & then glued the Donnelly tab right on top of this - worked great - in the end.

I removed the original mirror and button. Heating the button (I used a butane lighter) and then twisting with pliers popped it right off. The plastic mirror mount kit from Donnelly (which they just got from Pep Boys, I think) was crap, though. I tried it, but it wasn't nearly strong enough to support the heavy mirror. Switching to a conventional steel button and standard mirror glue (the "one drop is enough" kind) did the trick. It has held for almost two years now with no trouble.

Don't you find the V1 a bit in your sight line that low? I tried that location but couldn't get along with it - kept having to peer around it.

No, it works really well for me where it is. The suction cup mount isn't ideal, though; I replace the suction cups probably twice a year or so.

Ed,
Wow - these guys are paranoid aren't they - anyone who's going to go to the trouble of hardwiring a power line & routing the temp sensor is obviously not inexperienced & can surely handle a few more simple installation instructions...

The mounting tab that came with my mirror was some sort of alloy - pretty substantial - they must have updated it.

You might want to consider a glass mount for the Donnelly in your favorite postion (especially since you know how to get them off again). I'll send you details of what I did if you'd like (cost about $15 in parts & as solid as a rock).

Alan.

PS did you ever wonder what the other unused connections on the mirror do.. I sure do, but no answers I'm afraid.. must be there for some reason, best guess I could come up with was that they could be to drive auto dim side mirrors or are for other optional features we don't have.

PPS - came back to edit this one.. I checked again with a google search - what do you know! -found something this time (sure it wasn't there a few months ago) ECT FAQ

So external side mirror's it is... now could these possibly be compatible with the 996 auto-dim glass for the Aero mirrors???
