Unhappy Tragedy strikes ... yet again...

ARrrrrgh!
Was at a heavy equipment operators class at our District office - 18 miles from my home office -. After class, out on the parking lot, a bunch of us were shooting the breeze before heading home. Of course when they saw 'the shark' a crowd formed...few people believe that Porsche produced an '8'... up with the hood blah, blah... ooh... ahh! I was parked at the very end of the lot. With 10 guy's crowded around I missed something very important. I started her up and with a wave tooled away from the crowd. At 15mph I noticed a metallic "eak eak ' sort of sound. I thought it was something from the seatbelt guide behind the leather somewhere. Hit the Interstate and it got louder then decreased but would not go away... something amiss. Pulled off the highway to check it out. Couldn't find anything, got out to check the sunroof seals and rear deck seals.
There it was... 30 inches long, 9 inches high.
Glancing blow... a couple of shallow creases, multiple shallow rather than one long dent and several slightly raised, multi - directional, kinks. I'm going to fabricate a variety of padded hardwood dollies, and fill up the big cooler with dry ice before attempting to undo the damage.
I am really trying to preserve Pcakes in her original paint. I did a preety good job with the other two assaults. What's really weird is that the paint, with the exception of several swinging door scrapes, has remained on the car. ????
BTW the eak sound was the fender extensively shaving the left rear Dunlop. The sound was apparently transmitted up to the opening for the seatbelt guide.
Whip me
Beat me.... I need love.
Spank me with ... your leather glove.
I'll take digitals of the before/during/after to include tools , post later.
I love Pattycakes but there is a lot to be said for owning a 42' Dodge PowerWagon with railroad tie bumpers or a fifty - two Packard (Do you have that in green?)
John S. and a savaged Pattycakes

John I know your pain...

-I took "Jett Lag" to Fort Lauderdale today for a job interview and listened to the clutch master rod rattle all the way.

Funny thing about aviation: It is a small community. 5 guys were there, 4 were ex-coworkers. Thank you Osama. Can I pee on him, please?

Anyway- after 7 hours of alternately listening to Pat Benatar, Gloria Estefan, Asia, Rammstein [I have eclectic tastes], and my clutch rattling, I decided to adjust the rod from the pedal to the master cylinder. It worked, but I noticed some seepage around the rod. Nice.

-Well, HappyTruck is out front, ready to go. A 1966 Ford, it was born before me and is painted in 8 very good shades of Rustoleum. Runs like a top but eats gas despite the 4.0 liter 6 cyl; I don't care, everyone loves it and so do I.

NOW TELL ME....what exactly happened? Tear or dent on the sheet metal?

Normy-

Ahhhh! Say it isn't so! Not Pattycakes!

That's gotta suck.

And yes, I am the king of obvious understatement.

Geez, John. I'm really sorry to hear that.

It's just...wrong.

No idea what occurred based on your cryptic description.

Sounds to me like someone damaged the left rear of the parked car, then left the scene before the owner returned.

All,

Thanks for the sympathy.
Randy, Ian got it right.
Randy, any chance you might know a former sHARk driver from San Diego named Randy Wood?
Norm, glancing blow, probably close to parallel
strike event. Kind of like an aircraft tug/towmotor that runs some part of the baggage cart down the length of a commuter fuselage.
I guess that long unsupported area over our sHARKs rear tire but below the side glass could be a blessing. On the typical aircraft fusalage there are so many longerons, stringers, stiffeners, rivets -counter sunk- to hold them together, and facing surfaces liberally smeared with pro seal. Not to mention formers, bulk heads, deck braces/framing....
Being between work and the barn I had to roll a large towel around a piece of roadside 2x4.
Slid the device up to the damaged area from the back side of the wheel well.
Got a fair grip on it and slowly pulled and released until the 'rebound' was well clear of the shaved tire. the two larger creases are between 1/64th and 3/64th's. Besides the two creases there are 3 shallow hand sized dents -no problem- and 4 candy bar sized dents. The problem will be where the large and small dents meet I don't want to have a knuckle or a beer can situation. So, out with the heatgun, dry ice and some fabricated hardwood, chamois covered dollies.
Wish me luck.
Rusty, my vette, owning co-worker says the whole thing was planned and executed by my trusty, old
F-150 ....

Wink

Kinda LOL John...

-I've often wondered if HappyTruck, the '66 Ford might be a bit jealous of all the attention that "Jett Lag" gets. Of course...if Happy ever decided to get revenge [a short bed pickup that weighs over 5,000 lbs; the metal on the hood is so thick that I can WALK across it without it oil-canning...]the 928 would have a big problem!

WELL- Pattycakes is bloodied but unbowed. Cosmetic damage, though I doubt it will be easy or cheap to fix. **** happens....

As to the airplane thing....I once ferried a Dash 8 to our maintenance hangar, and when I showed the next morning to pick up the plane and do a days flying, the mechanics told me to go back to the hotel. On the way up, we had trouble getting full pressurization differential, and our flight attendant told us she heard a whistling noise near the galley at the aft of the cabin. Seems a belt-loader had been rammed into the aircraft at some point, and it made a gash 4 inches long, that terminated in a semi-circular hole the size of a dime. They had to cut a section of the fuselage about 2 inches wide and 6 inches long out and patch it...we didn't leave until about 6 hours later. Made for a long duty day...

Ok! What really happened? That sounds like an explanation I gave my father when I dented his car (way back when).

Update,
Took Pattycakes on a tour of 15 repair shops all agreed that while the the dents and creases could be removed -due to the ease of accessing the damaged area- there would be no chance of duplicating the sHARKs beautiful curving
rear fender without beer canning. Even discussed using hand made phenelic male and female forming blocks in leiu of my planned chamios covered hardwood blocks. The last shop I visited looked like the Taj Mahal of auto body shops and I WAS avoiding it figuring these guy's routinely add monthly overhead costs to every job order.
Suprise!!!
The place is state of the art. An enormous downdraft paintbooth/baking chamber, several lifts, each project area -25ftx25ft- has enough room to disassemble, layout, prep, detail a vehicle or just leave it sit while awaiting parts/attention. No overspray anywhere, multiple roll around fold out workbenches and vehicle prep racks -paper, foam, tape rolls.
The kicker: Is anyone out there familiar with the insurance industries proprietary - $600.00 a month fee - PATHWAYS(CCCInformation Services,INC)
system? Scott Daw let me watch him bring the 928 up on screen. CLEAR PRECISE EXPLODED VIEWS!
All parts ,attachments, hardware, fasteners, seals, trim,....But wait! That's not all. Sectional breakdowns by category, engine, suspension, electrical, interior,. Sub divided front to rear top to bottom. You can 'Layer' the graphics like engineering stack diagrams, do cut aways, or adjoining area views in search of parts. Each part listed and partnumbered.
The 'ENTIRE' left rear quarter - OEM, he confirmed the location of three with one phone call - removal, replacement, prep/paint included is $1232.45...there is a God!
Bottom line, rear quarter, new window seals, window trim/mouldings replacement. Remove and install door lock, handle, window trim, reveals, rear lights, markers...blah blah blah..
Total cost under $3100.00 and includes labor.
If I can have the insurance company use him - low bid so far - I hope to have the mirrors painted,
nicks touched-up, and all the glass trim pieces replaced.
The OEM quarter was a suprise, they also have a split quarter both pieces cost as much as the whole quarter...why bother? The whole quarter is resonably priced.
But the eye opener was that there are sources other than the Big Three that HAVE OEM parts in stock. Some one check that Pathway system out!
Other news I am back to a two muffler system, sorry, I never was the Two Lane Blacktop type, still have an improved rumble. The NASCAR sound had to go.
Norm, Speaking of body work and aircrew position openings... Did you hear about that major carrier bird that wandered off the taxi way on the way to the maint. barn this week? Lordy, Lordy! <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />
Keep em'rolling
John and (soon to undergo surgery) Pattycakes
