I noticed the reverse lights didn't work and found the fuse# 12 was ok, I pulled the reverse light relay# XXII and found there no 12v signal to the coil side (when I jumped out the switched side the lights worked), my question is where does the relay get the signal? I didn't see any switches at the shifter (automatic) is it at the trans. all the way in the back? Also seeing that relays seem to be a problem in these cars wouldn't it be a good idea to replace them with the common Bosch model? the terminals appear to be the same, I've been using them for many years and haven't had a problem to date. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Eric,
I believe you will need to drop the exhaust (rear half) and remove the heatshields to work with your reverse switch. It is located on the transaxle, right next to the gear selector lever and cable (driver's side). You might be able to at least get a hand up there to verify that it is plugged in and tight without going to all the trouble of dropping the exhaust by just loosening the heat shields and scooting them over.
I would check the connector (located in the spare tire well) first just to make sure it has a tight fit.
You could also check to see if you actually have to remove/replace/adjust by bridging the black and the brown wire (according to wiring diagram, don't have an 87MY with me at the moment) and confirming that the reverse lights come on.
If briding works, I would ohm out the switch on the transmission to check if it is faulty.
If you have the manuals, reference VOL III Transmission, 37-107 for the procedure for adjusting the starter lock and backup switch.
I would not mess with the adjustment though unless your car also does not start. I have not seen an adjustment issue that did not include both symptoms - though I guess it is possible.
HTH,
Greg

Thanks Greg,
The torque tube was just replaced along with the torque converter bearing, trans filter/ fluid and rear brake lines. My quess is the mechanic didn't reconnect the wires back up to the trans.
