Looking at an 82 with no start tomorrow morning.
I'm taking a drive an looking at an 82 5-speed tomorrow morning that does not start.
Owner has had it for 6 years in the garage and lost interest in fixing it up. He said that 1.5 years ago he put in new fuel pump and clean the tank he tried starting it up and it would not fire. He thinks he has voltage and fuel but not sure. I am bringing up a spark tester, noid light, FP gage and a meter. I'm not sure if this motor works the same as my 86 so any feed back would be helpful.
Price wise where should I be with this, he also mention when it was running a torque tube noise was evident.
Thanks

If the car is US speck it should be L-Jet. If the owner has the original paperwork or maintenance manual the option codes are printed there, later models had it on a tag in the trunk area. You'll want to see if it has the competition package or M220, both packages include limited slip diffs. Visual cues to the competition package is spoilers with proper front brake cooling ducts.
I bought my 82 5-speed with records and recent trans rebuild for 500.00. If you cannot drive the car I would assume that the syncros are shot and the tranny will need a rebuild. In a non drivable state unless the body, paint and interior are in exceptional condition the car isn't going to be worth more tha about $500.00.

I paid $1,000 for the Euro in St Pete. That guy had listed it at $2,500.
$800 in parts and new tires, and it's my new DD - you'll see it at Sebring - IMHO I think loading used 928's on a trailer is the best way to go - sorting them out is better done away from the purchase - and before driving.....

Ooop....its been F'ed with! No offense to Victor!
Unless he gives it to you at $1000.00 or less, I would absofreakinlutely let some other poor sole deal with this nightmare.
I made the mistake that I am trying to get you to be aware of. I bought a Euro for cheap and thought, Hell, I can get this thing sorted out and on the road in no time....and I kinda knew that guy. That was 3 months ago and I have hardly taken a break from working on it. If I had it to do again, I would have just walked away. There are too many cars out there that run properly and are worth paying the extra 2-3K for if you want a DD.
Sounds like the car you are going to look at has been seriously goofed with and you are just setting yourself up for a lot of work. This may be what you want and you have the spare time for a project car. But most guys say that and end up doing what the guy who is selling this car to you is doing.
I thought I knew better, but got sucked into the "Own a 928 at near nothing".
Good luck!

i can understand that, as far as time I have it and never ran away from a callange. I got off the phone with him and he is going to work on getting it started. Once I take it for a drive I can tell if I want to do this or not.

Personally If i like a car I would buy it regardless of the work needed as I would be fixing it for me and yes I like working on the cars so just about anything it needs I dont really mind doing, now just to buy a car to fix it and sell it thats another story, or if i was looking for a DD that needs to run right now i might look elsewhere, as this car sounds like it might need some major parts but after its done then it may be a very reliable car, In this case its hard to tell without more info

The nice thing about the OB is thier is not really a lot of normal death cards like TBF. If it were me I would crank it, I woudl check the oil, the water, smell the gas and everything else you would look at on a runner. I would assume the tranny is shot, at least syncros are. I would make my offer based on that. good lcuk let us know!

I delayed the trip till he gets the car started no drive no idea what could be wrong. Will need to put the interior back together also. He did replace the fuel pump 1.5 years ago and is getting power to it but it stop working. He feels dried up gas my be the issue, we shall see. If I decide not to jump on this one I will let everyone know and it's free game.
