Post Rebuilding '78 Axles

Unbolted the axles on the '78 at both ends, leaving the axle stubs in place. There were gold cups on the inside trans ends but none on the outside axle ends. Is it permissable to have caps on both ends of the axles? Would make for an easier less messy install. The displacement added by the thickness of a cup should be within the range of movement of the CV joints. Maybe enough that the bearings run on a less worn area of the races. I will be switching sides so they run backwards from the way they were.
