Smile Ride height / battery success !

For the last few weeks, my car has been up on stands having it's ride height adjusted. I used the quick and dirty (top of fender arch) method to get me in the ball park and then when that was close, I would then go over to the actual 928 measuring points and check them using a 175mm long brass rod. After going through 2 jack-up / jack (oh no) sessions... my car is within a few millimeters of being at 175 all around. This after driving the car for about 100 miles today.

I will have the car aligned, but even without the alignment done I can feel a vast difference. It is much more compliant over bumps and it seems the steering effort has gone way down. The alignment should only make it better.

On another note, since I was not driving the car, the battery went dead. After I put in the new one I decided to really check the battery connections. I took off the ground strap completely and found that one of the POs had placed a Teflon washer underneath the part that bolts onto the car body. It was still getting some connection through the bolt itself, but even that was loose.

I cleaned / sanded all of the connections in and around the battery. There was a ton of crud on those. Now, all of the connections are good and clean. The car started better than it ever has and now the volt gauge doesn't waver anymore. I am going to hit all of the ground points to see what other mischief, the PO has done.

Robert,
Way to go!! My PO had mine adjusted to the bottom of the fronts and is steered and rode like a pig. After I got it to where it was supposed to be the alignment made it even better.

Great news, Robert! Now you are finally going to experience the "real" 928 feeling!

I'm just surprised that you have the same height all around. I thought it was supposed to be less in the rear. I'd have to look it up to be sure, though...

Nicole,

I used the measurements from the UK 928 site and they recommended 175mm all-around. Generally, the concensus here is for around (+/- 10mm) 180mm in front and 173mm in back. So my being at or near 175mm is pretty darn good, especially considering that it was almost 3 inches too low in front.

I also put on 928 International's new aluminum under tray and it is a beauty. Now, I can start on my nose repaint.

Hi Robert:

Sounds like you've got it right and I did not.

Is that new underbelly pan in aluminum look, or is it black like the original plastic piece?

I'd like to have a nose job, too... On my 928, that is.

Nicole,

It's heavy gauge aluminum with a flat black powder coat. It's very nice.

I had the same profound driving experience after raising the front ride height to spec. What a difference just a centimeter makes! Mine is at 172mm all around now. Re: your battery experience - Some years ago, Sears installed a new DieHard in my truck. A few months later, it wouldn't crank so I decided to clean the battery posts. Couldn't believe what I found! They failed to remove the black plastic protective cap over the positive terminal! The connector was placed over it and tightened enough to cut through the plastic, making enough contact to work (for awhile). <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

Steve,

Don't you just love all the little things you find that the PO's and other stupid people do. I am seriously considering taking my car completely apart (to get at all of the wiring and electrics) and replace everything.
