Cool

Skip!

If you could, if you are able to cure the problem you've described with an occasional miss, please post the solution here! It sounds like the same problem I've had on and off with my '85.

I've sometimes been able to eliminate it by cleaning the plug wires carefully; for some reason it comes back eventually.

That's the same thing that the dyno shows.

Thumbs down

Can't help myself...
Dyno's are static testing a filter...no air flow?
Flip side, K&N presents "independent" dyno data demonstrating gains, hmmmm... how's that?
If the dyno was testing - from a base line - say a carb, throttle body, different set of heads, or, even a set of headers, great!
But, for either side to reference dyno data where the timing, volumetric efficiency, cam profiles, exhaust scavenging capability of a particular engine has not changed and then quote any particular outcome ...
Meaningless numbers are meaningless numbers as opposed to selectively mentioning numbers.
I'd look for 0 to 60, 1/4 mile number changes from baseline.
As to the wire getting nasty I think you got a case...just not one for universal condemnation.
Even in this economy, that's my two cents.
Opinions and trap speeds may vary

Great story, nice friendly safe fun. FWIW I noticed that when I stand on my 996 the AC cuts out. It come back on when i get "normal" again. This was news to me. I am looking into the manual to see if it is a design feature or a "bug".
(it was something I tried to do back whan I had a 72 vette as the AC can hurt the top end performance). Maybe the guys at Porsche have already solved the problem. So you may have been "disadvantaged" in your duel with the 996.

Gretch that feature if it was one is quite interesting. On the whole run out I felt the cars were pretty evenly matched as far as that kind of highway running is concerned but the lack of gear choices in the 928 really hurts, especially in the hill climbs. Another 30 to 40 hp would've helped. Judging from my Audi S4 6spd, he was probably able to drop down 3rd on occasion and work his way back up to 6 whereas I only had 3rd and drive.

I had the same experience against a 300zx a few years ago. He had taller gears. We were on a two lane where we could get up to maybe 110. The problem I had was I can only do 105 in 3rd then I have to shift to 4th (redzone). He had a taller 3rd gear. I tried to get him out on the highway, where my longer legs would help but he was too smart for it. Best I could do was run up on him when he had to drop below 100. my thrd gear was stronger, but was gone sooner......

Got revenge though..... the 300zx was crushed for scrap and now stores (canned) tomatoes. Gretch still roams freely.....

I removed the MAF and spray cleaned my wire with CRC electrical contact cleaner spraying at a distance of about 1 foot. The wire was pretty clean before I sprayed it but it had some particles on it. Now it looks really good. I have a K&N which was inherited witht he car, but I don't think it is oiled properly. I ordered a stock A/F to replace it. Who needs the hassle.
