Hi Andre,
do those Rods have a 944 or 928 part number on them? we pulled apart an '87 S4 engine a while ago and they had the 944 part# RARST forged rods. pretty cool purchase by the way.

Porsche rods are made by RST. R in front of the name is last digit of casting number, they end in xxx xR instead of normal 11 digit part number. This was do so that same casting can be used to make many different part types. A directly in front of RST is just company logo, not letter A.

928, 944, 924 S and 968 all share same basic rod design. 928 or 944 casting number depends on to which engine type rods were made for. Same casting could be used to make rods for other engine types also. Thats why there are 928 casting number rods in 944 and 944 casting number rods in 928.

Since there is only one meaningful measurement change between 944 and 928 rods its possible to make 928 rods out of 944 rods no matter what casting number they are. Usually 944 rods have more material in them also but this can be taken off if needed. Obviously crank needs to be balanced no matter what rods are used. If there is enough material in rods it might be possible to achieve balance just by lightening them and leaving crank as is.
