Post Wanted: Drivers Side Seat

My wife just informed me that she wants to keep "her" SportSeat, since it makes her feel secure when we run the twisties. (silly girl!!)

If I could find a single, drivers side, standard seat, in a light color, and in fine condition, I could re-color it to match this uncommon Grey-beige of mine.

Anyone out there got a spare.... in, say.... linen? I'll listen to just about any reasonable suggestion!

Yes yes yes. I have a passenger and a driver seat from the holbert car in perfect working condition. passenger seat is perfect, driver seat has some wear, but no rips or tears in the cloth. (the leather looks normally worn.)
it is the marron color. wiring is S4, with the heaters
let me know.

Brian:
I keep telling you that I have a practically unworn driver side seat with no heat in great condition. The only drawback I can detect is the color(grey-green) which would require re-dye. And I want a sport seat which I could re-cover in cloth. I have two sets of grey-green but want to keep my original heated driver's side.
Keep me in mind.

Can you e-mail me a couple of pics of that seat. I'm about ready to go this route.

Is that fabric in the center of that maroon seat?

Brian:

I will get some this week and post them or email them to you. I will probably swap the backrest leather cover of my driver seat for the backrest cover of the other seat, since you have to dye it anyway. Or I can leave the leather off and it would be easier to dye and stitch any loose parts before you install it on the seat. I prefer to re-cover your seat in fabric also, so the leather is simply a pattern for the upholstery shop.

Yes, it is fabric on the centers, and leather on the sides.

Mark, I'm sorry but the fabric lets it out of my project. I just want to dye a decent standard leather seat to match the passenger-side SportSeat that will stay in place.

Brian:
I was planning to swap the spare seat which is practically unworn and needs nothing. It has no heat so only two buttons on the side of the seat bottom. So I got to thinking that since you were planning to dye it anyway, why not send you my original upper with the spare lower which will fit your car. Since my original upper needs a replacement welt along the bolster (it is worn there), but is not torn, you could easily have the welt sewn in before you dye it. I would send the seat with the backrest uncovered, and would place the spare seat backrest cover on my original seat since it is the same color as my interior. You need to sand any seat you dye anyway first, so why not replace that welt and dye it off the backrest? I win, you win. And I would do the same to your sport seat: remove the cover and either repair it and dye it, or replace it entirely. You say: "But why not just send you the cherry spare seat?" Because that seat's color matches the interior of my car, so why dye it when it's cherry?!!
Then I got to thinking again: Why not sell your sport seat to me outright and take the money and buy yourself a comfort seat in a lighter color as you had originally planned? There must be other seats out there because comfort seats are more plentiful. Another suggestion is to go to some races and ask 928 racers to sell you their comfort seats for which they no longer have a use since their cars are no longer streetable. I did that and that is how I got almost a complete interior in my original color including my cherry spare seats (although they're not heated like my original ones are). They could use the cash and the space in their garage, and you can find a good deal. Talked myself out of a deal, huh??!!

Ron, thanks for the info. As you might know, I live up here in the great white north, and I simply do not have access to a number of the things that you do, and take for granted. The nearest race-track of any consequence is hundreds of miles away, and there are certainly no Porsche-class races at that track. Don't forget, California's population is the same as this whole country!
The other thing is the upholstery. My town of 6000 population has no "quality" upholstery shop. I contacted the one in the nearest city regarding this "welt replacement" and was informed that it would require disassembly of the leather cover, and re-sewing, which they said would leave the seam weak, due to the new set of holes, and that they would not guarantee the job, because of that. I'm no upholsterer, and it sounded to me like they just weren't interested in the job.
Anyway, that is the conundrum that I face, and it is the reason that I am seeking a relatively cherry unit to dye.

Give me a little time. I am searching some sources for an appropriate seat in a more appropriate color. What is your exact color requirement?

The current leather is Grey-beige, front seats, rear seats, door inserts, rear-quarters.

I am given to understand that any color will take dye.

The interior has significant amounts of black..steering wheel, console trim, etc, and there is also much chocolate brown..... roof-liner, "A"-pillars, hatch liner console lid.

And, the carpets are light beige......

Apparently this 3-color scheme was not common, but who knows what might have been replaced in the last 17 years. If I get a real cherry black or chocolate-brown driver's seat, I may dye the original passenger seat to match. There are quite a number of options, but they all hinge on a real nice driver's seat.
