I have 8" H4s on the 928 (plus a set of spares if anybody is interested). My Jeep TJ has the same 7" US lights early US (and some Federalized Euro/ROWs) have. The difference is night and day, especially with the highbeams on. Jeepers rave about the 7" H4 upgrade. I haven't converted them the E-code H4s just because I want one vehicle that is unquestionably legal. The Cibie conversions are apparently very fragile. The Hellas are much more durable with the same lighting quality. There are Autopal units sold on ebay that are the most durable with a slight lighting quality loss vs Hella/Cibie. The Autopal units cost far less for a pair than Hella or Cibie cost for a single unit.

Some on eBay.

I put 7" H4s in my '85. I'd like some 8" units but not for their cost. You can get them here.

Personally I went with the 60/55W bulbs. I'd consider going to a 100/55W, but never 100/80W. 100/80W is way too distracting to other drivers.

If you aim E-code H4s (or the 928 8" H4s) correctly, this is not a problem.

I have the 8" H4s, and with 100 watt bulbs I call it "night sun", awesome light from them.
With 100 w bulbs in the S4 driving lights and stonegard protectors, the lenses crack. Too much heat.

928 International does sell an 8" HID kit for our cars.

Not sure why Jim didn't mention 'em?

Bill has a real nice set of HIDs on his car - not sure where he got 'em.

To go from 7" sealed beams to HID requires more hardware, either H4 or H5 lamps. And to be clear, it's Bill Swift with the HIDs. I stuck with the H4 halogens, although I've considered HID.

928 Int'l. I have the single beam ones. Bill Ball brings up a good point about the H-5's. You do have to be careful about how you aim them with the HID kit as they do have the potential to really annoy others. I think they also sell a kit that has both high and low beams.

I have plenty of the 8" H4 lights in stock for $290 each.
The 7" Hella H4's are about $65 each.
Used fly out of the door before I even know I have them 8>)

There was an immense improvement changing out my sealed beams with 7" H4's. That is definitely a very cost-effective upgrade.

FWIW the info I have says the Cibies are just fine and not fragile, and a good improvement over the Hella for just a bit more money. Frankly the price is completely worth it. I got a pair of Cibies and a relay kit for much less than a single 8" H4 and only a little more than the Hellas. I wouldn't touch Autopal. We'll see how well they work soon.

While I'm getting a lighting education from this thread, I'm wondering what I've got in my '91 (stock headlights).

In H5's you may in practice be right - to keep them from being distracting to others you have to aim them so conservatively as to eliminate just about all the benefits to you...(most don't) However with H4's not so - the cutoff is so disitinct that higher output bulbs have almost no impact on the amount of spill to other motorists (IF they are adjusted correctly...).

Wow, Thanks for all the info and advise! I think I will start looking for a set of the 8" H4 headlights and get rid of the chrome rings. I will try the 100/80 bulbs in them. Is there a certain bulb that is better than others??
