I recall some people mentioning they passed smog tests w/o cats. But probably not CA. I wouldn't encourage trying.

I'll probably throw this gutted H away anyway. I got it from somebody in Texas and it seemed like it might be worth trying at the time.

I'm bumping my thread.

I've gotten all of my parts for the conversion except for the Dynomax Catalytic Converters I chose. I will be ordering those this week.

I opted to go for a 2.5" weld-in x-pipe off of ebay. Many of you have seen this same pipe when Terra Pistris posted his purchase a while back.

When the assembly is completed, I will post sound clips and pictures of it on here. There will be 2.5" piping all the way back from the x-pipe.

Cats are in! I chose the round body ones from Catco, ordered through Summit Racing at $53 each. It's a ceramic substrate, but I don't mind the restriction as long as I pass smog.

UPDATE!

The Universal X-pipe, cats and Flowmaster Super 40s were installed today. The car sounds fantastic with a mellow and deep idle. There is no drone in the car until at 2,000 RPM. I do have a vibration coming from the back that appears to be the passenger side Flowmaster's exit pipe rubbing on the cross member. When I get back from vacation I'll be bringing it in for repair.

As far as power gains go - the car accelerates VERY SMOOTHLY and efficiently. The transition from the low end of the power band to the high end when the flappy valve opens is seamless. Not bad for a completely Universal X-pipe that was $40 off ebay!

I love it!!!!!
