Post Shock or Shock/CoilOver ?

Just picked up a 1981 928, and first off think the suspension needs a bit of help.

Is it better to do the Shock/Coil package(other than the obvious cost difference), or, are a good set of shocks fine? Lets consider its all original stuff w/85k miles on them.

Second. For any solution, I'll take a suggestion on type and cost. (90% of the time its gonna be a road car, but I suspect an auto-x, or DE is in the future at some time).

Work out the whole package that you are aiming at first, and do it properly, once. ie, are you going to change wheel/tyre combo as well, or just shocks/springs? Can you put up with a harder, sharper ride to get handling you want? Somebody recently complained of harsh ride, after putting on EIbach springs, dampers I forget, and 18" wheels. Just the smaller sections tyres on 18" wheels will harden the ride up, but sharpen handling. Non-linear springs will also change the ride.
Mine will stay a street car, so when the front sagged, I just replaced the Bilsteins with new ones, and kept the std 16" disc wheels.

jpitman2....(hey thanks for the other reply also!).

Right now the car has a set on it similar to a C2 style, w/225 50s on front, and 245 50s on rear. I noticed some tire scrub over a dip. But, it just seemed like the frontend should not have diped as much for the type of road imperfection. From what I've read this car didnt have gas (which would make a huge difference), and am just wondering if the springs are good, does it just need a much better set of updated shocks.

Also. Any suggestion on a supply place?

A good set of shocks it the expensive part. The springs are not much more if you want to do the upgrade. In changing the shocks, you have to remove the springs anyway, so the labor is essentially the same.

I felt my car was too softly sprung and put stiff buggers in. I haven't driven it much since but, it seems MUCH improved.

You are closest to 928 SP (928gt.com), they are in NC. 928int'l and Devek can also serve your needs from CA. They all have websites and knowledgable staff. Good Luck

dont make it too complicated!! Ive had some of the best luck with my set up. infact, just before my Speedvision race, I was using a special Bilst/eibach set up. very very cheap, but veryVERY good!!
Here is the ticket. (and this is much better than the kim crumb spec set up for a number of reasons) take the stock front springs on your car, and move them to the rear. (ask 928intl for the front purches to adapt the rear to the front springs ) Next buy bilstien sport shocks for all 4 corners. Now, all you need is the front springs, and I would just use Eibach black springs for the front of the 928.

this works well for DE and street driving. good for racing, and great if the car is lightened to 2800lbs.

Its cheap, and effective.
