Post Tomorrow is suspension day - Wahoo.....

Boys and girls. According to tracking UPS (kinda like santa tracking <img border="0" alt="[icon107]" title="" src="graemlins/icon107.gif" /> ), tomorrow 4pm the Eibach/Bilsteins's will be at the front door. <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />

Here is the final question. To-date, what has been the most successful way on the fronts. (I'd like to do it 1x). Removal of upper A w/pulling the joint, or, unbolt the lower.

Bob
I just got done replacing my front shocks (which require removal of the coilovers and a spring compressor) and ended up trying both ways, one side removing the upper A arm as indicated in the manual, and on the other side I removed the lower A arm and spindle. It took a 22mm socket, 1/2 inch drive, 4 ft breaker bar with car on the lift to get the upper A arm off.
The problem I encountered was that there isn't much clearance to slide the coilover through the upper A arm opening, and this neccessitated the upper A arm removal for one side. On the other side, I had the lower A arm and hub off anyway to replace ball joints and ball joint boots so I gave it a shot and was able to just barely wiggle that coilover out. I think that this might be your best first approach and hope for the best. Also, JC Whitney sells the ball joint remover seen pictured in the 928 manuals for $17.99 so you don't ruin the protective boots.

I just did mine today. I dropped the lower control arm, and it went very smoothly!

It can be done without removing either control arm.....PITA but possible.

Thanks for the replies, pics, and posts. Hey Tony, excellent set of pics you have! I am taking some also and docoumenting as well.

On my 81' I gotta say that upper A sure looks too small to snake a coil through, and I think I've read the earlier 928's had a smaller upper A opening.

Mattman, what year is yours?

The eagle has landed.... <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> and I must say these are mighty fine looking pieces of suspension. I go pick up the joint splitter tomorrow, and its off to the races. (found out the S&G splitter was not carried any more <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" /> but <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> the store has a much better made one for about $45 (vs the $17 one).

All done.... <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" /> ........and WOW what a difference. Not even comparable to how it was previously(not even close).

Well......I'm off by 1/4" in the rt rear from the start (not bad), but gonna drive it some more, and let it settle a bit before adjusting again.

kaamacat,

Planning on doing the same thing to the 79 (Bilstein/Eibach setup). I've got the origianal Boges with stock springs (60k) and it's a little too soft. Let me know how the cornering is as well as your impression on harshness. I really don't care if it's real firm as it's a weekend car.

Thanks.

Chuck. Its kinda interesting to compare, because the rear Boge's were totally shot, so weight xfer was heading to the front for sure. The fronts were ok, but not much dampening.

I also plan to self adjust the camber (think thats the vertical one) this weekend with the ol' 2' level as it was out from the get-go. (inner tires were worn bad).

As for initial steering and feel. Well the steering is more like "point-and-shoot", quite incredible. I almost can't describe how good it
is other than "extremely accurate".

As for comfort.....hmm.........jury is out on that one. Much, much siffer, and probably not gonna impress someone when you hit those x-overs before a bridge, but, when you are on a nice piece of wmooth twisty road, WOW.

I would say this. If I had $1000-%1500 to make a single choice for the car, and choices were Tires, or Exhaust, Suspension (Coilovers like this), or Engine mod of a sort..........and the car had nothing done to it previously. Hands-Down I would do the suspension. Probably the single most pleasing improvment.

Good Luck,
Bob.

Bob,

Thanks for the feedback parner. I've got the Ott rear drop links, Weltmeister front swaybar, and the poly swaybar bushings right now. It tightened up the cornering somewhat, but it is still lacking in the firm feel of the car. Also, with the stock rear springs(LARGE DIAMETER) I can't max out the rear drop links due to the interference with them. The Eibachs will allow max adjustment.

Looking forward to that mod!! Thanks again.
